The Provost and Executive Vice President serves as the chief academic officer of the university with responsibility for academic leadership. The position serves as the second in command senior officer for the university working with the team of approximately 50 senior staff who are responsible for achieving the university's established major goals identified by the president and the Board of Trustees. The Provost assumes a lead role in Central Michigan University's strategic planning for academic programs, fostering the development and enhancement of high-quality certificate, baccalaureate, master's, doctoral-level and professional programs, including medical degrees, through ongoing review and assessment, raising academic standards, and expanding research. The Provost leads university processes for accreditation of the institution by the Higher Learning Commission as well as the professional accreditation of individual academic programs. As an important part of this process, the Provost works with the deans, the Academic Division staff, and the advancement team to identify new sources of revenue to support existing programs, as well as the creation of new programs which are in keeping with the mission and goals of the university. The Provost will work with members of the Board of Trustees and appropriate committees on issues related to academic affairs and other issues as delegated by the President.

The Provost must possess the intellectual vision and energy necessary to lead a complex, major institution of higher education to its next step in the learning and research communities. An ability to successfully motivate a university-wide team at all levels, to develop an understanding of core values at CMU, and to demonstrate appropriate responsiveness to the needs and concerns of students, faculty and staff of a public doctoral research higher intensity university with a medical school and multiple off-campus instruction and research locations is critical. The position of Provost leads a multifunctional integrated operation that links together the responsibilities of Academic Affairs, Academic Administration, Health Affairs, Information Technology, Research and Sponsored Programs, as well as coordination with the Divisions of Enrollment & Student Services and Finance & Administration. As the chief academic officer for the university reporting directly to the president, the position provides leadership in the planning, development, assessment, and implementation of all academic programs and many service areas.Earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
