Winthrop University, a highly ranked, public, comprehensive university, announces a national search for an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts (Photography & Time-Based Media). This is a 9-month, full-time, tenure- track appointment in the Department of Fine Arts within the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Salary and rank are dependent upon qualifications. This position requires daily contact with students, faculty, and staff on campus. Additionally, the successful candidate may be expected to occasionally participate in events in the evenings and on weekends. Winthrop enrolls a diverse student body, which closely mirrors the racial and ethnic diversity in the state, and has recently received accolades for its success in graduating students of color.

The ideal candidate will assume a major role in teaching and advising within the department’s B.A. and B.F.A. degree programs, and occasionally teach graduate level courses in the M.F.A. program. The selected candidate will take on a leadership role to help grow the area of time-based media within the department while teaching a range of established courses in the curriculum, include digital and analog photography, alternative photo processes, digital imaging, videography, audio and animated arts, and professional practices.

Responsibilities:

• Teach 18 contact hours each semester.
• Expand time-based media practice within the curriculum.
• Occasionally teach upper-level and graduate-level courses.
• Participate in curriculum development, accreditation, assessment, and program planning.
• Effectively advise and mentor fine art majors.
• Maintain creative/scholarly activity as demonstrated by an active research profile.
• Engage in professional stewardship and academic responsibilities to the department, college, university, discipline, and community, as appropriate.
• Assume other responsibilities according to departmental needs and candidate's qualifications.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• M.F.A. or equivalent terminal degree in photography, video, or time-based media.
• Ability to teach digital and analog photography, and videography.
• Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite along with professional video and audio applications.
• Understanding of history, theory, and contemporary methods in photography, and video and sound art.
• Demonstrated ability to address 2D, 3D, and 4D foundational media and design principles.
• Actively engaged in scholarship, publication, and professional activity.
• Evidence of effectiveness in teaching.
• Willingness to collaborate, communicate, and contribute to the growth of the department.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Minimum of two years of university-level teaching experience.
• Knowledge of 3D fabrication, coding, installation, audio, performance, emerging technologies, and social practice.
• Exhibition record with regional, national and/or international exposure.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience working with diverse student populations.

About the Fine Arts Department
The Department of Fine Arts at Winthrop is a creative community that offers a flexible and multidisciplinary approach to Fine Arts. The degree programs include a B.A. in Art Education; a B.A. in Art with a required minor; a B.A. in Art History also with a minor; and a B.F.A. with concentrations in Ceramics, Jewelry/Metals, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. The department has 15 full-time faculty who teach in the studio disciplines, art history, and art education. The studio-based curriculum is enhanced by professional development opportunities where students learn by doing. Winthrop University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) is the academic home to over 600 undergraduate students majoring in dance, design, fine arts, music and theatre, and approximately 40 graduate students in four masters program.
