Winthrop University, a highly ranked, public, comprehensive university, announces a national search for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Illustration. The position is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track appointment in the Department of Design within the College of Visual and Performing Arts with salary and rank being dependent upon qualifications. Daily contact with students, faculty, and staff on campus is required. Additionally, the successful candidate may be expected to occasionally participate in events in the evenings and on weekends. To that end, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to working in an interdisciplinary, diverse, and highly collaborative undergraduate environment.

A record demonstrating practical knowledge of contemporary illustration principles and expertise in the history, theory, and practice of illustration is required. The Assistant or Associate Professor of Illustration must have the credentials required to teach a wide range of traditional and digital media. Candidates who are committed to helping illustration students reach their artistic potential and assist them with preparation for professional success and to potentially enter graduate school are ideally suited for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach at all levels within the undergraduate curriculum, totaling 12 credit hours/up to 18 contact hours each semester.
  • Coordinate the illustration program.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate Design majors.
  • Maintain creative and scholarly activity as demonstrated by an active research profile.
  • Participate in curriculum development, accreditation, assessment, and program planning.
  • Fully support and participate in the department's student recruitment efforts.
  • Engage in professional stewardship and academic responsibilities to the department, college, university, discipline, and community, as appropriate.
  • Assume other responsibilities according to departmental needs and candidate's qualifications.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a illustration, fine arts, or related discipline.
  • Record of teaching, scholarship, and professional activity.
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching.
  • Willingness to collaborate, communicate, and contribute to the growth of the department.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of university-level teaching experience, including experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in some or all of the following areas:
    • Drawing (perspective, landscape, expressive, figure, gestural, etc.)
    • Visual storytelling
    • Painting (variety of media)
    • Sequential narrative (storyboarding, visual development)
    • Elements and principles of design
    • Comparative anatomy (human v. animal)
    • Awareness of historical and contemporary illustrators, styles, techniques
    • Digital Illustration/storytelling techniques
    • 3-D work in wireframe, clay and mixed media

About Design and the College of Visual and Performing Arts
The Department of Design, one of four academic departments in the college has seven full-time and nine part-time faculty serving undergraduate majors pursuing a professional degree in visual communications or interior design. The College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) is the academic home to over 600 undergraduate students majoring in dance, design, fine arts, music and theatre, and approximately 40 graduate students in four masters program. The College currently has 60 full-time faculty and 50 part-time lecturers, practicing professionals from the surrounding metropolitan area. Winthrop’s academic programs are nationally accredited by NASAD, NAST, NASD, NASM and CIDA.
