The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Department of Physics and Astronomy welcomes applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position to begin in Fall 2019. Responsibilities include delivering quality instruction within the undergraduate and graduate programs in Physics, conducting research, and participating in service activities.
The department offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. The department has strong research focus on gravitational wave, radio, and optical astronomy, applied optics and lasers, nanotechnology, nanophotonics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, computational physics and physics education. Members of the NASA and NSF funded Centers for Gravitational Wave Astronomy (CGWA) and Advanced Radio Astronomy (CARA) were involved in the landmark discovery of gravitational waves in 2015 that led to a Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics and a Nobel prize. There are six state-of-the-art laboratories funded by the NSF, NASA, NIH, and the US Air Force, and a space technology incubator (STARGATE) funded by the US EDA and Texas ETF.

Ph.D. in Physics or related discipline from an accredited university.

Preferred Qualifications

While the emphasis of the search is broadly in the areas of theory, observations, and experiments related to gravitation and relativistic astrophysics, candidates with a strong potential to develop an independent research program in other areas of interest to the department will be considered. The successful candidate is expected to attract extramural funding to support a vigorous research program. A strong record of independent publications is required. Existing externally funded research and mentoring of students in research are considered a plus.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
