Logistics Manager

University of Puget Sound

Job ID: 4592

Location: Pac Rim Program

Full/Part Time: Full-Time

Regular/Temporary:

Appointment: This is a 2 year temporary, full-time position. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019 and the appointment is expected to last through June 2021.
Pac Rim Program Description:
The Pacific Rim Study Abroad Program (PacRim Program) promotes the liberal educational mission of the University of Puget Sound, extending the curriculum to incorporate substantive encounters with Asian life and culture. PacRim also serves as a forum for students' personal development through involvement in a strong community, the cultivation of tolerance and independence, and improved intercultural competence.
Once every three years, a group of students from the University of Puget Sound travels to Asia for nine months of rigorous academic work and experiential learning. Visiting several Asian nations, the group engages with different systems of culture, economics, politics, religion, and philosophy. Academic work, Asian classrooms, and experiential education in Asian cultural contexts extend the limits of the conventional curriculum.
The PacRim Program mobilizes an approach that seeks to maximize site utilization and increase intercultural competence among student participants. This approach focuses on intentionality and critical thinking about socio-cultural differences and favors learning through immersion with cultural mentoring. This is accomplished through interventionist approaches to students' study abroad experience that are designed to promote intercultural understanding. Rather than relying on simple exposure or unguided immersion, this approach focuses on appropriate and ongoing interventions in the study abroad experience of students that connect course content and local settings in Asia to further the learning outcomes of the PacRim Program.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan, arrange, and implement all logistical requirements related to the movement and housing of students, staff, instructors, and PacRim Directors. This includes researching, arranging, and purchasing tickets, visas, lodging, and entrance fees.
  • Communicate frequently during the travel year with students, instructors, and the PacRim Directors regarding the details of the itinerary.
  • Work with Asian Studies Director and PacRim Directors to prepare students in the year prior to travel.
  • Create relationships and facilitate communication with hosts in countries on the PacRim itinerary.
  • Work with course instructors to arrange opportunities for students to interact with locals in each country.
  • Help to promote the following student learning outcomes in coordination with the PacRim Directors and other managers.
    • Exhibit a high level of intercultural competence;
    • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of local, cultural life-ways, and regional socio-cultural, political, and economic variation;
    • Understand and articulate the influence of historic and contemporary power and wealth inequalities on peoples and regions;
    • Develop a strong understanding about the histories, beliefs, and practices of Asian cultural groups;
    • Cultivate lasting connections with people in Asia from diverse cultural backgrounds;
    • Adjust and adapt to ambiguous and unfamiliar cultural and social situations;
    • Reflect on how their values have been shaped by their own cultural backgrounds as well as their experiences abroad;
    • Demonstrate analytical, research, and writing skills through the completion of an independent research project.

Other duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Identify and book suitable spaces for class sessions.
  • Collaborate with International Programs to develop a system for reporting and dealing with emergencies.
  • Remain current on U.S. State Department information about destinations in order to maintain a safe itinerary.
  • Assist instructors with student accommodations requests (such as extra time on tests, or requirements to use a laptop during tests).
  • Work with the other managers and the PacRim Directors to develop and participate in student activities during the travel year.
  • Participate in regular meetings during the travel year with the PacRim Directors and other PacRim staff to debrief on recent activities, confirm upcoming activities, and identify and address emerging challenges and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Jointly supervise PacRim work study students who will receive funding for their employment during the travel year.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience leading groups in international travel.
  • Experience living or working in Asia.
  • Ability to successfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to work in difficult and changing environments.
  • Capacity to make difficult decisions quickly.

  • Ability to live in close quarters and similar lodging as students for the entirety of the travel year.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with an Asian language.

Diversity Statement:
  • We acknowledge the richness of commonalities and differences we share as a university community; the intrinsic worth of all who work and study here; that education is enhanced by investigation of and reflection upon multiple perspectives.
  • We aspire to create respect for and appreciation of all persons as a key characteristic of our campus community; to increase the diversity of all parts of our University community through commitment to diversity in our recruitment and retention efforts; to foster a spirit of openness to active engagement among all members of our campus community.
