Job Description Summary

The Instruction & Web Technologist will assist the Bentley academic community in the identification, selection and integration of appropriate web-based instructional and research technologies. This involves designing, researching and/or deploying custom or off-the-shelf applications/scripts/websites for all academic initiatives including the department website, Bentley's Online Learning site, the Bentley Library website and the library catalog. He/she will also be responsible for designing experiences on various multimedia platforms including print, web, social media, audio and video. In addition, he/she will be responsible for managing the work of student staff hired to help develop and implement web application projects.

Essential Duties
  • Assist faculty and ATC staff to evaluate and integrate emerging web-based technologies to enhance student learning experience in face-to-face, blended, and online learning environments
  • Collaborate with ATC staff to design and implement solutions for providing seamless user experience and exceptional customer service
  • Use modern web technologies and UX design principles to design and deliver web sites that improve usability and user satisfaction, including working with 3rd party API to integrate with existing applications
  • Manage and maintain department's web servers both on-campus and in cloud environments
  • Use web content management systems (e.g. Wordpress, Drupal 8) to maintain and deploy academic websites using CMS frameworks, themes, plugins and other custom scripts
  • Manage web projects from concept to completion ensuring goals are met at each stage of development
  • Troubleshoot existing web applications and databases in ASP .NET, PHP and/or MS SQL environments
  • Work collaboratively with other IT departments when needed where academic applications require data and/or data feeds from Bentley's administrative applications (Workday, Banner, etc.)
  • Support academic requests for designing materials for print, web, social media and video platforms (e.g. Infographics, Research Posters, graphics for online courses)
  • Provide training and support to faculty through documentations, workshops and blogs
  • Explore and adopt creative solutions to solve day-to-day instructional and customer service related challenges
  • Maintain the University's branding guidelines and web standards
  • Maintain, generate and analyze Analytics reports
  • Maintain sources codes and backups of existing applications and websites
  • Provide technical support to users of the various academic platforms available at Bentley (Zoom, Kaltura, Blackboard)
  • Thorough understanding of overall web site design, including basic usability, industry standards, and web analytics
  • Recruit and manage 1-2 students to perform technical tasks, including Web development and technical assistance. Supervise all aspects of student employment including, hiring, scheduling, and assessment


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2-3 years of related work experience
  • The individual should have basic to intermediate experience in Web/UI design tools and techniques (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, ASP, .NET, Wordpress)
  • Knowledge of web content management systems is a must (e.g. Wordpress, Drupal 8)
  • Working knowledge of databases (relational and object-oriented) to facilitate integrations with 3rdparty applications and Bentley's source data
  • This role requires strategic thinking, innovative ideas, analytical/problem-solving skills; decision-making, sophisticated communication and team-building skills, design talent, a fundamental understanding of Internet technology, and a strong comfort level with technical concepts
  • Strong visual, verbal, and written communications skills is must
  • Ability to work independently or in teams and on concurrent multiple projects is essential as is a proactive approach.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • Experience supporting technology adoption in higher education or similar setting including course management and/or digital learning
  • Experience with public speaking and conducting workshops or training sessions is a must
  • Understanding of information architecture, visual interface design, responsive design, accessibility compliance (Section 508, WCAG 2.0), web analytics is preferred


Work Environment
  • Typical office environment with extensive sitting, typing and other general computer work
  • From time to time there will be some on-call duties such as campus open houses that are scheduled on weekends, as well as evening work to finish projects under a deadline.
