RESEARCH SPECIALIST B
Duties: The Research Specialist will primarily support research in the Hughes Lab, a new laboratory in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. The Hughes lab studies the integration of tissue patterning strategies from developmental biology into tissue engineered systems to build models of human disease, reconstituted tissues for regenerative medicine, and new types of biological machines. The lab has expertise in single-cell analysis, tissue construction, soft materials, and micro-scale engineering techniques. We are particularly interested in building and understanding next-generation kidney organoid systems to address the significant human health impacts of congenital kidney disorders.
The Research Specialist following established and evolving protocols develops and performs basic to moderately complex laboratory experiments and scientific activities in sterile cell and organoid culture, standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, molecular cloning), microscopy, and microfluidics under the supervision of Dr. Hughes and assisting senior lab members. Records, interprets and analyzes results in using prescribed methods and identifies options for new studies. Maintains laboratory equipment and lab supplies. Performs routine lab support.
Position contingent upon continued grant funding
Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree in life sciences, bioengineering, biomaterials or related field and 1 year to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Previous experience with organoid culture, standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, molecular cloning), microscopy, and microfluidics preferred.
