Assistant Librarian

Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Special Collections Head of Outreach, the Special Collections Public Services Librarian will actively coordinate reference and reading room services for special collections patrons. This position will oversee administration of reading room management software (Aeon) to ensure that materials requests are delivered appropriately, and will be responsible for staffing the reading room reference desk and overseeing staff working on the reference desk. As the primary liaison to on-site and remote users, the Special Collections Public Services Librarian will respond to inquiries and fulfill all requests in a courteous and timely fashion. This position will respond to digitization on demand requests from patrons, and will work closely with Digitization and Metadata staff in Special Collections to ensure requests are completed and delivered to patrons.


* Manage the Special Collections Reading Room and its operations, including creating and maintaining reference desk schedules, statistics, materials paging and delivery, as well as stacks maintenance
* Supervise Aeon and act as Aeon administrator; duties include setting up new accounts, establishing workflows for requests and instructing desk staff on appropriate use of Aeon
* Create training materials for reference desk staff and provide adequate training for desk staff to provide patron services
* Oversee departmental email account and respond to messages or triage messages as appropriate
* Conduct basic reading room tours and participate in other outreach activities as needed
* Provide reference service to patrons in person, as well as via phone and email, and log all reference interactions into Desk Tracker
* In collaboration with archival staff, provide specialized reference service for the NBC5/KXAS Television News Archive and assist in fulfilling digitization and licensing requests
* Coordinate reproduction requests and communication with patrons requesting permission for publication and use
* Manage workflow for departmental digitization projects as well as the Scan-on-Demand program and communicate with Digital Projects Unit to ensure collection materials are secure and requests are fulfilled in a timely manner
* Provide classroom instruction or assist with classroom instruction related to Special Collections
* Supervise student employees and manage a yearly student wage budget
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of major collections, frequently used materials, exhibits, services and new acquisitions in Special Collections
* Provide instruction to staff and researchers on the nature and proper handling of collection materials
* Ensure the security of Special Collections materials

Minimum Qualifications:
* Master's degree from an accredited graduate library program with archives coursework, or equivalent education and experience
* Demonstrated ability to balance and complete multiple concurrent projects, set priorities and work creatively in a rapidly changing environment
* Demonstrated knowledge of special collections librarianship attained through experience, training or formal coursework
* Demonstrated public services experience
* Ability to work independently, communicate effectively, and work as part of a team
* Strong interest in promoting the use of special collections to diverse audiences
* Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
* The ability to lift up to 30 pounds and utilize ladders and step stools

Preferred Qualifications:
* Knowledge of subject areas relevant to Special Collections at UNT, including: LGBT history, history of the north Texas region, documentary and fine art photography, archival film and video, book history, artists' books and book design
* Experience working in a Special Collections or archival environment
* Experience documenting procedures and policies
* Knowledge of research techniques for primary source materials
*Familiarity with specialized software including Aeon, Archon and/or Archives Space
* Supervisory experience, particularly of reference services
* Experience providing public services in a special collections repository to a diverse clientele including faculty, undergraduate, graduate students and members of the public
