Job Description

The Missouri School of Journalism invites applications for the Curtis B. Hurley Chair in Public Affairs Journalism, based in Washington, D.C.

The Chair will lead our Washington program, which offers undergraduate and graduate students coursework and hands-on experience, using the nation’s capital as a laboratory. The Chair will direct the educational program for students in Washington. The Chair will also engage in training and outreach to the professional community and the public to improve the practice of journalism. The Chair will coordinate these activities with the Missouri School of Journalism and the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute.

The Hurley Chair was endowed with an estate gift from E. A. and Lucille McLaughlin. The Chair was named for the country editor, former journalism student and friend of Walter Williams who encouraged Mr. McLaughlin to attend the University of Missouri and lent him $400 in 1927 to do so.

The Chair will engage with professional journalists and communicators on important issues facing the profession by organizing and moderating the annual Hurley Symposium. The Chair will also serve as Washington liaison for administrators, faculty and students from the Missouri School of Journalism and the University of Missouri. Along with teaching and providing course content, the Chair will serve on the project committees of all graduate students enrolled in the Washington Program.


We are looking for professionals who have worked energetically to sustain and further the highest standards of journalism. Candidates should have proven records of achievement, innovation, and collaboration in journalism; be technologically fluent; exhibit the willingness and ability to seek ways of harnessing emerging media to promote journalism’s democratic purpose; and demonstrate an appreciation for the challenges and opportunities of working within an academic environment.

The Chair should have a deep understanding of the role of journalism in a democracy. The Chair should possess a strong network of contacts in media and strategic communications organizations to maintain internship opportunities for students and also should have the ability to evolve the program in a changing media landscape. The Chair should have an excellent reputation in the professional community in order to represent and enhance the prestige of the Missouri School of Journalism.

This 12-month appointment will begin effective August 2019, at the rank of full professor, professional practice (continuing non-tenure track). Candidates must have, at minimum, an undergraduate degree and significant relevant experience.
