The School of Medicine at the University of Missouri, is soliciting applications from outstanding candidates for the position of Chair, Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences. The candidate selected will be charged with the growth and development of clinical, teaching, and research excellence in the Department. The Chair reports to the Dean and serves as the department’s academic and administrative leader, providing direction for the clinical, educational, and research programs.
The Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences is a department of the School of Medicine and University of Missouri Health Care (UMHC) located in Columbia, Missouri. UMHC is one of the most comprehensive health care networks in Missouri; it includes five hospitals and 496 staffed beds. The Department of Pathology plays a critical role in the tripartite mission of patient care, education and scientific discovery. The Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences trains physicians, fosters innovation through discovery and application, and collaborates with virtually all subspecialties throughout the University of Missouri.
The Clinical pathology division provides diagnostic services to patients and also has a forensic service through the Office of the Medical Examiner. The department seeks to use up-to-date technology for rapid accurate laboratory medical testing for all patients, and provides data for precision medicine. The Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine service is improving the efficiency and safety of the use of blood products by patients in central Missouri.
The Anatomy faculty have pioneered the use of virtual classrooms, internet-based rigorous anatomy courses, and other innovative teaching strategies. Medical students are provided a background in normal anatomy and histology, and in pathology and pathophysiology. There is an active and highly rated graduate program in Integrative Anatomy, which also teaches undergraduates and has post-doctoral fellowships; there is an active and well-funded research program.
This hybrid department presents challenges and opportunities to a prospective Chair, to grow and foster the research efforts including from the clinical side, to maintain and improve diagnostic excellence, and to similarly continue innovation and excellence in teaching at all of the levels in which the department’s faculty are involved, from undergraduates to PhD candidates, medical students, post-doctoral fellows, and residents.

At MU’s comprehensive academic medical center, scientists join clinicians in producing lifesaving discoveries and delivering them to patients through a far-reaching network of hospitals, clinics, and telehealth sites. The School of Medicine’s more than 660 faculty physicians and scientists who educate more than 1,100 medical students, residents, fellows and other students seeking advanced degrees. Their research is focused on potentially lifesaving discoveries that focus on the most prevalent health problems for the state and nation. The successful candidate will have the following qualifications or attributes:
Hold an MD or MD/PhD degree, and must have or be able to easily obtain a Missouri medical license and academic accomplishments that merit appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure;
A history of extramural funding and an established record of excellence in teaching and research.
Prior administrative experience or leadership at successive levels of responsibility;
An understanding and commitment to the mission of an AAU Research 1 university and the School of Medicine mission;
Experience with external stakeholders at the state, federal and international levels;
Commitment to shared governance, collegiality, and continual professional development for faculty and staff;
Foster collaborative interactions between clinical and basic science faculty members within the department and the School;
Commitment to leading departmental discussions regarding departmental vision and strategic plans;
Desire to lead developmental activities and cultivate alumni and donor relations.
Demonstrated effective leadership, management and communication with faculty, staff, students, and other administrators;
Commitment to innovative strategies in diversity and inclusion initiatives as it applies to faculty, staff and students;
Familiar with national trends in undergraduate, graduate, and medical education; and passionate about improving education for all students;
A strong collaboration record and willingness to collaborate with others; and
Willingness to adopt a transparent, open-minded, respectful and approachable leadership style.
