We are seeking an Associate Dean for Health Studies to lead the Public Health and Health Sciences programs who will continue the School’s record of educational excellence while shaping the future of healthcare education in the hemisphere. Key areas of responsibility include faculty and curriculum development, research, establishing & maintaining collaborations with a variety of public health and health policy partners, student success, and program evaluation/accreditation. The Associate Dean is a key member of the Dean’s Leadership team. This faculty position will be full-time with approximately 50% percent dedicated to the Associate Dean role and the remainder to teaching and research.


The successful candidate will be a highly respected public health leader with a strong record of building capacity in public health; developing, implementing, evaluating public health programs and policies; strengthening organizational ties; and a strong record of teaching and research. It is expected that this individual will have the necessary academic record to be appointed as a faculty member at the level of Associate Professor or higher with a doctorate degree (PhD, MD, DrPH) and also would be expected to make important contributions to the teaching and research mission of the school.

Responsibilities

Manage faculty teaching primarily in the Health Studies and Public Health Programs including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and orienting them; managing teaching assignments; mentoring and supporting faculty in achieving their professional development goals; and evaluating their performance. Develop new graduate programs and research initiatives. Expand Hemispheric and Global activities. Represent SONHS at appropriate university, regional and national meetings. Support SONHS activities related to student recruitment, review all admission applications, conduct new student orientation each semester, and oversee advisement of Scholars and Fellows (e.g. Foote Fellows).

Curriculum

Work with faculty to design, evaluate, and offer exemplary Public Health and Health Sciences Programs. Work closely with Assistant Dean for Student Services and the Dean’s Leadership Team to schedule and manage courses.

Community Health Practicums

Work with community partners to identify opportunities for student practicum placements and/or internships. Maintain regular communication with all community partners and establish new partnerships to support program needs.

Program Evaluation and Accreditation

Maintain Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation of undergraduate Public Health program. Contribute to SACS accreditation processes. Maintain currency of SONHS Handbook, Clinical Faculty Handbook, and appropriate sections of the UM Bulletin and SONHS website.
