Position Summary

Under general Supervision of the Irrigation Foreman, this position performs routine maintenance, field layout, and irrigation system maintenance

Essential Functions

  • Interprets irrigation plans, and prepares field layouts, draw as-built diagrams of completed irrigation systems.
  • Repairs, installs, maintain irrigation systems.
  • Assists other trades that require a specific license or certification.
  • Operates trencher, tractor, and other commonly used grounds equipment.
  • Parts take-off and estimates project cost.
  • Maintains inventory of fittings, sprinkler parts, and related materials.
  • Installs and maintains 24 volt systems.
  • Inspects, installs, repairs, and replaces pipe, and fittings.
  • Replaces worn washers or other parts in irrigation valves.
  • Fits gaskets, coupling, fittings and valves.
  • Solder connections of copper pipe.
  • Maintain back flow preventers on University properties.
  • When requested, reports for snow removal. Removes snow from walks, steps, ramps and parking lots by power equipment or shovel.
  • May be requested to direct lower classifications, permanent and temporary assigned personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, students, and other employees of the organizations.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to add, subtracts, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole number, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rates, rations, percentages and to draw and interpret bar charts.

Reasoning Skills:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of standardized work routines and the ability to follow oral written instruction involving a number of steps.
  • Knowledge of all types of landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Must be knowledgeable of related OSHA and EPA regulations and able to effectively communicate regulations to others.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and irrigation software applications.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures.
  • Ability to respond to situations requiring immediate attention and to daily priorities that are established and frequently monitored by Supervisor.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as truck, tractors, tractor and snowplows.
  • Must be able to read and interpret landscape and irrigation drawings.
  • Must be able to report to work early in the morning, weekends, and holidays for snow removal.
  • Must provide own transportation to and from work.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Irrigation certification and a thorough knowledge of irrigation equipment.
  • Colorado Department of Health, Certified cross connection control & backflow prevention device testing
    • Certified at time of hire or within 6 months of hire
  • Five years’ experience in an irrigation landscaping and/or grounds maintenance position.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted.


Please note, this position will also require a valid Colorado driver’s license and insurable by the University of Denver’s insurance carrier and a post-offer, pre-employment health screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar working with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software, including WebTMA.
