Job Description Summary:

GW’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for HIV/AIDS and neglected conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for HIV/AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. The department of Microbiology, Immunology & Tropical Medicine has an opening for a half time Laboratory Assistant position in the Clinical Immunology Laboratory (CIL) directed by Dr. Jeffrey Bethony to assist in the immunological components of clinical trials of experimental vaccines for humans.

The primary purpose of this entry level position is to provide routine assistance, under direct supervision of the laboratory manager, to faculty, students, teaching assistants and department research staff in carrying out experiments and tests in the Clinical Immunology Laboratory (CIL). This position performs routine lab maintenance, cleans and preps equipment for research use, maintains stock levels for assigned laboratory, may order components and parts, and coordinates shipping of defective equipment for repair and/or replacement. This role reports defective equipment/parts/etc. to supervisor. Other responsibilities include:
•Optimizes, develops, qualifies, troubleshoots and executes ELISA assays (Sandwich, Indirect, Direct) and In vitro cellular assays (Proliferation, Flow cytometry, in vitro cell culture, cytokine analyses)
• Maintains good laboratory records and generation of protocols and reports
•Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Special emphasis will be given to individuals with experience in immunological assays conducted in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures under Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
