Overview

The Principal Gift Officer reports to the Associate Vice President for University Development, in cooperation with the Deans and Vice Presidents across the university, and is a member of the University Advancement team. The incumbent is responsible for managing and facilitating various efforts in fundraising. The Principal Gift Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. The Principal Gift Officer, in partnership with the AVP for Development and campus leadership, will plan and implement development and campaign strategies on behalf of Fresno State. The Principal Gift Officer is expected to serve as the top performer within the division, and act as a leader and mentor of other front-line fundraising professionals.

Compensation

The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits.

Position Summary

Major duties of the job include:

  • Participate as a member of the advancement team. Attend regular meetings with the AVP for Development to discuss progress on reaching and identifying new advancement goals.
  • Liaison to Campus Units: Frequently interacts with the Vice President for University Advancement, AVP for Development, Deans, University Vice Presidents, and other Senior Administrators to identify projects for private fundraising;
  • Prospect Identification: Occasionally reviews annual giving records, public information and volunteer suggestions for likely major gift prospects $100,000 or greater;
  • Prospect Qualification: Frequently meets with prospects to assess their capacity and propensity for major gifts;
  • Prospect Cultivation: Frequently plans and implements strategic steps to move prospects toward a major gift decision;
  • Prospect Solicitation: Frequently develops and presents major gift proposals to prospects;
  • Principal Gifts: Frequently works with senior administrators to develop prospect strategies and proposals for gifts $500,000 - $1,000,000+;
  • Donor Stewardship: Regularly interacts with donors to ensure good stewardship of gifts received;
  • Special Events: Occasionally organizes and presents special events designed to engage prospects;
  • Boards and Volunteer Engagement: Frequently interacts with volunteer leaders and boards to engage them in the mission of Fresno State;
  • Support and/or lead fundraising efforts for mini-campaigns and comprehensive campaigns.

Secondary duties of the job include:

  • University-wide representation: Occasionally works on projects as directed by the Associate Vice President;
  • Division Professional Development: Frequently acts as a role model and resource to other development staff, and is available to assist in training for new hires in development.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of fundraising best practices, trends, tools and technology. Ability to exercise sound administrative judgment and initiative in the development of new methods and procedures.
  • Proven record of effectiveness in processes and procedures to achieve and manage fundraising efforts consistent with best practices;
  • Demonstrated track record in working with individuals and groups, ability to work as a member of a team, recognition of the importance of education to individuals and society as a whole;
  • Exposure to management, including budgetary responsibilities;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Highly motivated and proven self-starter, creative and entrepreneurial characteristics;
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the university from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;
  • Ability to develop and implement short and long-term plans and initiatives to meet established development goals, objectives, and for advancing the vision of the university as set forth by the President.
  • Ability to plan and implement comprehensive development and campaign strategies.
  • Flexibility to travel as needed to develop and maintain relationships;
  • Competency and experience with the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and the internet;
  • History of regular attendance and positive performance evaluations;
  • Knowledge of and experience with a nonprofit organization;
  • Experience with and ability to plan and implement capital/comprehensive campaigns and/or specific experience in major gift solicitation, corporate-foundation relations or constituent relations;
  • Experience with alumni/donor databases and campus applications such as Advance, Reeher or Raiser’s Edge.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required;
  • Minimum of eight years of increasingly responsible and successful fundraising experience;
  • Successfully raised multiple gifts of totaling $1,000,000+;

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Master's or other advanced degree preferred;
  • Experience/background in higher education.
