Position:  PROFESSOR OF COMPUTER SCIENCE - MERCED CAMPUS

(Successful candidates may be assigned to other locations)  

Salary:     $55,018 – $75,137 (additional compensation for doctorate)

This is a full-time, tenure track instructional assignment at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Career Technical Education. The professor will teach a variety of Computer Science courses.  The specific mix of teaching assignments will vary from semester to semester. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening and weekend hours.

Merced College is a midsized community college located in California’s Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267 acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. Merced, incorporated in 1889, offers historical sites, affordable housing, access to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and is the Gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra mountains as well as home to the University of California Merced campus. The Computer Science Cohort offers a wide variety of courses. Classes to be taught include first and second level programming, discrete mathematics, management information systems, cyber security, and drone technology. Project-based teaching experience is a big plus. Career Technical Education Area: Offers programs that focus on training for short-term certificates geared toward job placement as well as associate and transfer degrees. CTE disciplines include Agriculture, Industrial Technology, Business, Computer Science, and Management, among others. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Master’s degree in computer science or computer engineering 
    OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in either of the above AND master’s degree in mathematics, cybernetics, business administration, accounting or engineering 
    OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering AND master’s degree in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration 
    OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics AND master’s degree in cybernetics, engineering, mathematics, or business administration 
    OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND master’s degree in information science, computer information systems or information systems

OR

  • The equivalent.
    • (Note: Courses in the use of computer programs for application to a particular discipline may be classified for minimum qualifications purposes, under the discipline of the application.)
  • Must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching courses in Computer Science
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policy
  • Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments
  • Perform tasks needed for student records, e.g. submit grades on time to admissions and records

Interview Information: Those applicants deemed most qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee which includes a 15-minute teaching demonstration on a selected topic.   Finalist interviews with district administrators will follow the same or next day.  A limited number of candidates will be invited to interviews.
