GENERAL SUMMARY Supervise and perform public safety and security functions on the University campus.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES Supervise, inspect, evaluate, and guide/direct assigned campus police officers and detectives in the performance of their duties.

Disseminate orders, policies and procedures to all assigned personnel.

Ensure the adherence to these policies and procedures and the proper performance of assigned duties by all assigned personnel.

Enforce rules, regulations and policies with all assigned personnel, and others as necessary.

Address, report, and investigate violations of policies and procedures.

Initiate the immediate relief or suspension from duty of any officer or employee of the department when it is necessary to protect the welfare of the employee, the integrity of the department, or the safety of the campus community as provided for in these regulations and in accordance with applicable University Policies.

Make recommendations, as requested, for hiring, disciplining and terminating employees of the department.

Work closely with and provide leadership to employees.

Provide functional supervision for employees not directly under the sergeant's supervision.

Act as a liaison between upper management and subordinates.

Act as a liaison with other law enforcement agencies and related organizations.

Effectively utilize resources by assigning officers their work and equipment to ensure the proper performance of police functions.

Provide job training to ensure proper performance by assigned personnel and aid in their development.

Exhibit good community relations by supporting and getting involved in community-oriented policing programs and activities and maintain those good relations by providing quality service.

Promote public relations through speaking engagements and committee participation.

Assist staff, faculty, students, and visitors with public safety and security related problems that may arise.

Ensure adherence to Clery mandates as it pertains to proper classification, reporting and alerts.

Draft and disseminate timely warnings as necessary.

Write complete, concise and coherent reports for a variety of purposes and evaluates reports for continued investigations.

Relate to and work effectively with people of diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds.

Oversee and direct crime scenes or major incidents as necessary.

Recognize crime trends from available data, develop and implement a plan to address the trend, with the goal of eliminating it.

Work such hours or performing such tasks as are assigned by a ranking officer.

Perform related Departmental duties as required.

Perform the functions of the Officer, Campus Police, and Detective Officer, Campus Police, and substitute for such officers and detectives during periods of absence.

Provide necessary command in the absence of a ranking officer.SUPERVISION EXERCISED Administrative supervision is exercised over detective, officer, clerical and student support staff.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Supervision is received from the Executive Director, Deputy Director, and/or Lieutenant of Campus Police.
QUALIFICATIONS Ability to read, write, interpret instructions, and perform basic arithmetic, typically acquired through the completion of a high school education, is required. A Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Three years' experience as a police officer, detective or other directly related law enforcement experience is required.

Physical and mental ability to perform all duties of the position, including: - Effect an arrest. - Drive department vehicles. - Subdue and search suspects and prisoners. - Use police weapons and other safety equipment.

Ability to meet departmental standards of reasonable personal hygiene is required.

Certification by the State is required.

Possession of a valid Michigan Driver's License is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed both indoors and outdoors under a variety of conditions ranging from not exposed to adverse conditions to being outdoors in inclement weather subject to an array of hazards. Some travel required.
