The Innovation & Design Space Technician is responsible for managing the complete lifecycle of a wide range of digital and physical fabrication equipment. Specific responsibilities include researching emerging equipment needs; ordering equipment; receiving equipment deliveries; assembling equipment; installing and operating equipment; ordering and managing consumables; maintaining equipment; developing equipment safety and trainings procedures; recycling or selling of retired equipment; providing consultation on the College's other innovation and design spaces; and developing and managing all stakeholder relationships.

The Weissman Foundry on the Babson College campus is an exciting new strategic educational initiative and building named in honor of esteemed Babson alumnus and trustee Bob Weissman '64, H'94, P'87 '90 and his wife Jan P'87 '90. This 9,800-square-foot experiential education facility will combine a flexible design studio classroom with related programming, a substantial assortment of digital and physical equipment and a large-scale innovation space where students from Babson, Olin and Wellesley colleges (BOW) will design projects where a wide range of, experiences, systems and artifact prototyping is central. This new building is envisioned as an innovation and design space where student entrepreneurs of all kinds can come together to learn and design creative works. The Foundry is a strategic action by Babson College to lead transdisciplinary education at the intersections of Entrepreneurship, Design and the Liberal Arts. The student-centered space is less about the actual tools provided and more about building creative community and curricular via transdisciplinary programing that will bring Babson College, Olin College of Engineering and Wellesley College students together to invent new ways to solve problems.
  • Working with the Foundry Manager, manage all equipment based activities including, but not limited to: researching and recommending equipment needs; installing and maintaining equipment; and developing safety trainings.
  • Work with student teams on design, prototyping and making-related challenges while offering solutions to advance project endeavors.
  • Train and provide day-to-day oversight and support a diverse group of Babson, Olin and Wellesley student employees to meet key operational goals
  • Train faculty and students on equipment, to co-create innovative programming centered on students' interests.
  • Attend Foundry classes, events or other programming with Babson, Olin and Wellesley College students to educate them about Foundry resources.
  • Work with the Foundry Manager to oversee activities in the Foundry to ensure health and safety of those engaging in the building operations; coordinate with the Facilities Management health and safety staff to comply with all procedures and regulations related to use of any toxic or hazardous materials in the building.
  • Work with the Foundry Manager to identify and pursue opportunities for programs and events at the Foundry, focused on creating impactful BOW student educational experiences.
  • If qualified through a PhD or terminal master's degree, may work with appropriate Division Chair to propose a credit-bearing class in the Foundry focused on an area of their expertise.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as required.
Education Requirements:

Minimum Level of Education Required - Bachelor's degree (strongly prefer in a design-related field such as product/industrial design, software design, engineering, the arts, or architecture)

Position Knowledge/Skills & Abilities Requirements:

  • A minimum of 1-year successful experience in an equivalent position.
  • Must have a demonstrated passion for hands-on education, fabrication and creating.
  • Must have prior supervisory experience including working with students.
  • Must have the ability to work collaboratively, and also independently.
  • Proven ability to work with colleagues across multiple departments and divisions; and with both internal and external stakeholders. Ability to establish credibility and confidence.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to lead and motivate others who are not direct reports.
  • Ability to infuse student empowerment and create design/innovation options for student teams is critical.
  • Ability to facilitate difficult conversations/negotiations.
  • Must have strong leadership, judgment, and creative problem-solving experience.
  • Must have a strong attention to detail with the ability to multi-task; strong database management skills; and superior analytical skills.
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to anticipate and embrace change; demonstrate willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.
  • Must have proficiency or an interest to learn major 3D design software as well as other software used in typical Innovation space environments.
  • Must have a proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Envisions and proposes new methods to perform tasks that support ET&A; takes thoughtful risks; and accepts new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.
  • Anticipates and embraces change; demonstrates willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.
Working Conditions:

Requires some evenings/weekends. Flexibility to oversee programming, events or student employees that may occur outside of normal working hours.
