Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of STEM Center - Emporium Lab Coordinator.­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­  The STEM Center/Emporium Lab Coordinator will oversee the delivery of services & instruction to students in the STEM Center and the Emporium Math Lab.  This includes coordinating resources and services for students, student events that support outreach and retention, and oversight of tutoring and supplemental instruction.
 
This position reports to the Dean of Arts & Sciences and works closely with program faculty, student services personnel, and other staff to provide smooth articulation for students.

BBCC is a small rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State, and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.  Big Bend Community College serves over 4,000 students, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,000, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site, online instruction, and interactive classrooms.

Essential Job Duties

Primary essential duties and responsibilities include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Coordinate and evaluate the activities of the STEM Center and Emporium Lab. This may include, but is not limited to, tutoring, supplemental instruction, learning strategies workshops, study tables, study groups, workshops, and other appropriate activities that support student achievement and the college's mission.
  • Recruit, supervise and evaluate tutors, supplemental instructors, student workers, and volunteers in both the STEM Center and the Emporium Lab.
  • Provide ongoing training for STEM Center and Emporium Lab tutors, supplemental instructors, students workers, and volunteers.
  • Work with the Dean to develop the annual budget and monitor revenue and expenditures.
  • Inventory and maintain materials for student checkout from STEM Center front desk.
  • Work with Institutional Research to request, organize, and analyze data necessary to develop trends and statistical-based strategies that support the STEM Center, Emporium Lab, and the college's mission.
  • Support faculty and staff with assistance in WAMAP troubleshooting, question coding, and accessible technology.
  • Utilize technology to support the delivery of relevant, up-to-date curriculum.
  • Provide direct service to students such as help students set educational goals, assist students in the admission and registration processes, participate in orientations and workshops, track student progress, help students assess barriers and connect them with campus resources.
  • Collaborate with program faculty to develop initiatives with other campus departments and K-12 schools to prepare students for post-secondary education.
  • Develop promotional fliers and materials as well as update and manage STEM Center webpages.
  • Coordinate with BBCC faculty and staff to organize and regularly hold STEM outreach events and perform other outreach duties for STEM.

 OTHER WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Follow safe work practices and policies, including, but not limited to security and safety, fire, disaster, and safe lifting.
  • Ensure self-compliance with college policies and procedures as well as state and federal requirements.
  • Ensure the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the college's values.
  • Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the college.
  • Ensure that additional duties, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong desire to build relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team to increase student success and degree completion.
  • Knowledge of theory and principles of effective teaching and learning strategies, activities, and assessments.
  • Math competency through calculus (may be attained after hire).
  • Ability to use and learn new instructional systems, web conferencing, and other multimedia systems and software.
  • Ability to read and troubleshoot code to support the Emporium Lab's online homework platform.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work independently, set priorities and complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to take initiative.
  • Comfortable with using technology to reach students and increase efficiency.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing, including the ability to engage in one-on-one and in public forum.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities, especially in cases requiring quick action and resolution.

 

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

At the time of application, candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a STEM or STEM education or related field (e.g. Science Ed, Math Ed, Biology Ed) from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Previous experience working with students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a STEM-related field or industry.
  • Experience working in higher education, preferably at a community college.
  • Previous experience teaching or providing student support services at the post-secondary level, specifically working with under-prepared students.
  • Successful completion of math through calculus.
  • Documented strong organizational skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish fluency.
