Basic Function

The Arts, Humanities and Healthcare Public Information Officer (PIO) will work as a part of the College Communications & Media Relations Department to promote visibility and a build a favorable image of NOVA with a concentration in arts, humanities, healthcare and student success related programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

The PIO will provide leadership in building and promoting positive relationships between the college, its constituency groups and stakeholders. Working with the campuses and following the marketing/communications plan, this position will implement strategies to engage print, TV and radio outlets with the college and expand the NOVA brand by building awareness of NOVA activities, events, programs and services in arts, humanities, healthcare and student success related areas. This position manages the reputation of the school by working closely with various stakeholders, constituencies and various media outlets and trade publications.
In conjunction with College Administration, Community Outreach Specialists, and other NOVA groups, the PIO will work to promote a positive image of the college in accordance with campus and college public relations goals. This position will collaborate with various academic and administrative personnel to provide leadership for outreach efforts by developing and implementing innovative strategies to promote programs such as Financial Stability; Pathways to Baccalaureate, Guaranteed Transfer Partnerships, NOVA Healthforce, Student Scholarships and CCI – a State Department Program. This includes planning, coordinating and implementing activities that build positive relationships with reporters and garner media coverage. This position has the complex task of working with specific disciplines in the areas of the Arts, Humanities and Healthcare to provide consistent messaging, communicate program/departmental goals, and publicize college-wide achievements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in business, management, marketing, public relations, communications, education or related field, or equivalent applicable experience and/or training; several years of experience in promoting educational programs and/or developing partnerships with educational stakeholders; several years of experience in writing press releases and working with the press.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in business, management, marketing, public relations, communications, education or related field; community college experience; familiarity with local service area business, educational, press, and governmental entities. Knowledge of the Northern Virginia area; Familiarity with higher education; Established contacts with local or regional press outlets; Proficiency in a second language commonly spoken in the Northern Virginia metro area.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent written and oral English communication skills, knowledge of media and public relations practices and principles of marketing. Working knowledge of arts, humanities, healthcare and higher education student success programs. Management and leadership abilities as well as excellent news judgment. Basic background in conventional and digital photography and Microsoft (PC) office applications. Knowledge of AP Stylebook guidelines, and experience with social media including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
Creative self-starter with demonstrated talent for seeking opportunities to advance the image of the college; A high degree of professionalism and the ability to work successfully with College Administration, Community Outreach Specialists as a member of the Communications/Media Relations Office; Superior verbal and written communication skills; Excellent interpersonal skills; Able to project a positive, professional image of the college using marketing and good judgment; Outstanding organization skills including ability to prioritize and carry-out projects; Able to give professional presentations; Excellent proof reading and editing skills; Proficient computer skills, with emphasis on electronic communication skills in a web-based environment; Knowledge of social networking and other cutting-edge communication tools; Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities; A goal-oriented multi-tasker.
