Associate Professor - Social/Cultural Geography - 1805240

The Department of Human Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Social/Cultural Geography. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor and will commence July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter. 

The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in Geography or a related field, with a demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates who conduct research in one or more of the following areas: critical social/cultural theory, Black geographies, Indigenous geographies, feminist geographies, queer geographies, geographies of inequality, the politics of place, diaspora and transnational studies, and geographies of religion. We seek applicants considering these themes from contemporary or historical perspectives, as well as with qualitative or mixed methods experience.  


The successful candidate will have an established international reputation, a record of innovative and independent research of the highest quality and success in attaining competitive external funding. Candidates will be expected to sustain and lead research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding and competitive, and externally funded research program Applicants will provide evidence of excellence in research as demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing. 

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will be expected to teach large introductory and senior undergraduate seminar courses, and supervise independent research of senior undergraduate students. Candidates must l have experience with mentorship, and will be expected to actively participate in departmental affairs and administration. 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. 

The appointment is in the Department of Human Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The successful candidate also will become a member of the Tri-campus Graduate Department of Geography and Planning, and will teach and supervise graduate students in that department.
