PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Teacher Education Advisement and Retention reports to the Deputy Executive Director of the Center of Pedagogy in the College of Education and Human Services (CEHS) and is broadly responsible for policies and procedures related to teacher education student progress and completion by promoting developmental advising and implementing a data-driven and highly personalized approach to student academic services. This position is responsible for developing and managing strategies to identify and proactively intervene with students at- risk. The Director of Teacher Education Advisement and Retention and team will work closely with staff in the Teacher Education Admission, Recruitment and Diversity Office, the Office of Clinical Internships and the Registrar’s Office to ensure connection with students and their ultimate success.

• Design and implement an overall developmental advising model/plan that is suitable for Teacher Education students and reflects the CEHS and University's mission and vision plan.
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of Advisement and Retention.
• Work with CEHS faculty and staff to implement TK20 to support data retrieval for assessment and accreditation purposes.
• Implement a new advisement module to facilitate appointment scheduling and case management and student success.
• Create a Student Success Team, to identify barriers to student success, and report on trends and issues that affect retention and persistence, and address those issues through practical programming found in best practices in higher education.
• Develop training materials and conduct professional development trainings such as workshops for teacher education academic and faculty advisors to create and sustain a culture of developmental advising on campus for Teacher Education students.
• Serve as resource for teacher education academic advisors and faculty advisors with respect to policy interpretation, student concerns, and advising best practices.
• Work with academic and faculty advisors to implement and monitor an early alert system to solve concerns related to student success and improve retention.
• Evaluate and track the effectiveness of advising services, utilizing student feedback, to ensure effectiveness and meaningfulness for all teacher education students.
• Serve as front line person for students (and their families) with particular challenges and support needs, working with campus support services and staff as deemed appropriate.
• Work with the Office of Clinical Internships to ensure that systems and processes are in place to ensure a smooth transition from coursework to fieldwork.
• Ensure that annual student audits are conducted efficiently and on time.
• Oversee the design, refinement, and execution of support services and academic activities for newly admitted teacher education students (MSU and transfer) including necessary processes related to advising and registration for new students.
• Assist the Office of Clinical Internships with edTPA preparation services in the form of communications and workshops.
• Advise teacher education students directly, including connecting students with University resources such as counseling services and student support services (e.g., tutoring, supplemental instruction, peer mentors), interpreting withdrawal options and processes, creating academic improvement plans for students facing academic discipline, processing division change requests.
• Refine and manage the appeals process.
• Participate in the Teacher Education Policy Committee and other related committees.
• Assist in the development and review of academic policies and procedures for the Teacher Education Handbook and the University catalog.
• Represent the CEHS and Center of Pedagogy at local, state and national conferences.
• Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Research staff to assist in the compilation and production of retention reports and manage and produce the EPP, Title II and other reports annually.
• Ensure the teacher education advisement portion of the website is up-to-date.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

Qualifications & Requirements

Master’s degree in a related field, or equivalency required. Three years’ professional experience in an institution of higher education, two years of which are in an administrative capacity, or two years as an administrator in education, or other field that is directly related to the functions of the position. Each candidate should possess the ability to advise and counsel students and others concerned with the program, manage details and prepare clear and comprehensive reports, and effectively manage staff. Initiative dependability and punctuality are essential. Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills as well as commitment to the programs mission are required.

REQUIRED:

Master’s degree in a related field, or equivalency required. Three years’ professional experience in an institution of higher education, two years of which are in an administrative capacity, or two years as an administrator in education, or other field that is directly related to the functions of the position.

PREFERRED:

Terminal degree in higher education administration or related field. Candidates who have a success in training undergraduate and graduate students. Bilingual skills and advanced technology skills are highly desirable.
