Duties: The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

The laboratory of Dr. James Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the 'go-to' organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

Given our strong momentum and aggressive plans for continued growth, GTP is looking to expand and add depth to its executive team through the addition of a Chief of Strategy and Business Officer (CSBO) to develop and drive the long-term strategic vision and daily operations of the Alliance Management, Legal Affairs & Business Development teams.

Reporting to the Director of GTP, the CSBO partners with the Director of GTP and GTP's Executive Leadership team to develop the overarching strategy for a research-driven organization that is at a pivotal stage of organizational maturation. You will critically assess all potential corporate alliance opportunities and risks, assessing them for strategic and program fit. You will contribute scientific and business expertise to the credibility of efforts, providing a clear assessment of future partnerships including decision support and analysis for strategic alignment. You will partner with functional leaders within GTP to translate strategies into actionable operational plans with aligned objectives, measures, and initiatives across the critical dimensions of the program. You will lead the creation, performance monitoring, and assessment of programs key performance indicators. Build and maintain relationships with academic and industry key opinion leaders that will support GTP strategy, competitive position, and continued success.

You will also provide strategic leadership and oversight to Alliance Management, Business Development, and legal groups within GTP.

This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of gene therapy, defining and executing solutions delivering potentially transformational care for patients with rare diseases. As a qualified candidate, you will have a proven track record in strategic leadership and alliance management within a research or biopharmaceutical setting.

Qualifications: Master's Degree in Life Sciences with 10 + years of progressive experience as a scientific leader within a large research environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Ph. D. or MD strongly preferred
MBA preferred but not required.
3+ years working in a strategic, alliance creation/management within the biopharmaceutical industry required
Proven ability to successfully navigate and thrive in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment
Must have the ability to influence others to drive sound decision making.
Must be resilient and highly adaptable to regularly shifting priorities and challenges
Must have an experience with managing large, complex projects and comfort with ambiguity.
Highly functioning, detail-oriented, and analytical candidate who can think strategically and holistically about organizational expansion and across multiple departments/units
Exceptional communication and collaboration skills a must! Strong inter-personnel skills are essential
Self starter but also a strong desire to contribute and work collaboratively to achieve goals

Vision

As engines of knowledge and new ideas, universities have the unique potential to define the future rather than be defined by it; to pioneer change rather than merely manage it. To do so requires a plan both visionary and pragmatic. The Penn Compact 2022 motivates community members to innovate, be radically inclusive, and positively impact their local, national, and global communities.

Penn’s fundamental priorities — increasing access, integrating knowledge and engaging locally, nationally and globally — are supported by the three core values that make us uniquely Penn: inclusion, innovation, and impact.
