Job Details

Duties: We are looking for a highly motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic individual that is excited about doing research focused on cancer genetics and genomics. This individual should be interested in serious career in competitive science. The research specialist will be working in a dynamic research group that carries out investigations in a competitive field. The specialist will be closely working with the principal investigator and other lab members on publication generating projects. The work will involve work with and development of cutting edge molecular techniques, particularly massively parallel sequencing RNA, DNA and single cell sequencing. They also should be interested in bioinformatics analysis, with either some expertise in the field or a willingness and interest in learning about it, with the goal of doing independent analysis. It is expected that the research specialist will develop a high level of independence, and be able to take a lead on projects. The research specialist will work in an environment that is team oriented, where creativity, enthusiastic and dedicated effort are highly rewarded. This position also may involve work on weekends and University holidays.

Research Specialist A - The research specialist will be involved in the genetic and genomic characterization of patient derived samples, particularly in the generation of massively parallel sequencing data, but also in other sophisticated methodologies. S/he will be responsible for the generation of data and data analysis (including
some bioinformatics). S/he will work cooperatively with laboratory members and collaborate with other groups (both laboratory and clinical) on campus. S/he also will be responsible for general laboratory duties/responsibilities as needed. Multi-tasking is important.

The Research Specialist-B position will undertake the duties outlined for the RS-A position, with the additional expectation that the candidates will develop novel solutions to research questions in addition to employing only established methods. Moreover, it is expected that the RS-B candidate will have a greater laboratory experience than the RS-A candidate, such that s/he can make greater contributions to more complex genetic and genomic studies.

Qualifications: Research Specialist A: BA/BS in Science and 0 to 1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. An understanding of genetics and/or genomics is required. Experience with PCR, sequencing and high throughput genomic analysis is preferred. Experience with general laboratory techniques is required. Good verbal and written communication skills and understanding of scientific literature are required. Excellent organizational and record keeping skills are necessary.

Research Specialist B: BA/BS in Science and 1 to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
