Position Description:
Cal Poly's Office of Academic Programs and Planning is looking for a talented and experienced leader to serve as the Director of Academic Assessment in the Division of Academic Affairs. Working independently under the general direction of the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Planning, the Director of Academic Assessment provides leadership and direction for University and General Education assessment efforts focusing on the five WASC Core Competencies of writing, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, oral communications, and lifelong learning. Cal Poly sees assessment as an opportunity for the improvement teaching and learning at the level of the academic department, program, and individual instructor. The Director will thus provide guidance and support to departments for the assessment of program learning outcomes/objectives, will work with the Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology (CTLT) to provide assessment workshops for faculty, will supervise the administration of the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA), and will work with Institutional Research to administer the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The Director will benefit from a strong assessment team in Academic Programs and Planning, as well as the faculty and administrator representatives on the university's Academic Assessment Council.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Education and Experience:
  • Earned doctoral degree, significant teaching experience in higher education, and five or more years of experience with all aspects of student learning assessment in higher education.


  • Required Qualifications:
    1. Strong quantitative and qualitative skills and experience in research methods, including a knowledge of statistics as applied to the assessment of student learning
    2. Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to develop data-rich reports that are easily understood by various stakeholders
    3. Knowledge of formative and summative assessment principles and practices
    4. Extensive knowledge of contemporary pedagogy
    5. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities and coordinate multiple projects with potentially conflicting demands
    6. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, surveys, and various on-line systems
    7. Demonstrated ability to work successfully and collaboratively with a diverse faculty and staff
    8. Excellent ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    9. Proven ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere
    10. Ability to interpret, communicate, and apply university/system policies and procedures
    11. Proven ability to apply independent judgment, initiative, and discretion to address problems
    12. Ability to adapt to changes in systems, supervisory directions, policies, and procedures
    13. Demonstrated high level of attention to detail

    Preferred Qualifications:
    1. Progressively responsible experience in providing assessment services for a large public institution
    2. Completion of assessment training provided by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), including the Assessment Leadership Academy
    3. Familiarity with WASC expectations for the assessment of student learning
    4. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Office 360 calendar and email, PeopleSoft, and SurveyGizmo

    Special Conditions:

    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
    • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
    • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
    • Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
    • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
    • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
    • Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
