Position Description:The opening is for a 9-month tenure-track position with appointment as Assistant Professor of Sociology starting August 2019. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. or ABD with a promise to complete the Ph.D. by the date of appointment. Candidate must have clear teaching potential and demonstrated research potential. A record of successful teaching is desirable.  Written and spoken English fluency is necessary.  Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:
The successful candidate should be well qualified for and ready to teach in these essential areas:

  • Family studies
  • Women’s and gender studies

Additional preference will be given to candidates who have experience in nonprofit development or who hold a Master’s of Counseling or an MSW and can teach in the area of addictions counseling. We seek a candidate who is also prepared to teach various core courses in the sociology major, as well as courses that are included in one or more of our certificates. We seek a colleague who will engage with both on-campus and online students, particularly with a willingness to involve undergraduate students in research and sponsor/co-sponsor Sociology Club.

Responsibilities:
The incumbent should be eager to work hard, love to teach, and be committed to maintaining steady flows of research accomplishments and service obligations. Teach a 4/4 load (12 credit hours) per semester. Some teaching at the cross-listed undergraduate/graduate level may be needed. A significant portion of the teaching will be in an online format. Assess student learning outcomes. Constantly seek ways to enhance learning and the sociology major. Develop new courses per program needs. Assist in recruiting and retaining students. Maintain regular office hours. Attend all department meetings. Student advising responsibilities may be assigned, but are not anticipated at this time. Teaching is typically considered 60% of the assignment. The successful candidate will exhibit an ongoing scholarly interest, and a commitment to remain active in a scholarly manner throughout their career. The Department of Sociology recognizes scholarship of discovery, integration, application, and pedagogy. Joint publications are accepted and encouraged, including collaboration with students. Research is typically considered 20% of the assignment. Service internal to the University will be at the levels of department, college, and university, while external service will serve at least one of these levels, the community, state, region, nation, or international level.  Service is typically considered 20% of the assignment.

About the Department:
The Department of Sociology has eight core faculty. Several faculty are also policy fellows of FHSU’s Docking Institute of Public Affairs.  The Docking Institute conducts applied social science research and organizational planning, and there is potential for FHSU faculty to consult for the Institute when it is mutually beneficial.  The Department has close to 20 adjunct faculty at any given time.  The majority of our approximately 175 majors are fully online students.  The Department also supports the University’s general education curriculum.  We have a small Sociology Club of on-campus students.
