The Young Innovators Program (YIP) develops the next generation of innovative thinkers by engaging exceptional high school students in hands-on laboratory research, encouraging them to explore STEM opportunities in pharmaceutical science research, and empowering them to discover new ways to improve the health of patients through the practice of pharmacy.

YIP was created through the Eshelman Institute for Innovation at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to cultivate a culture of innovation among aspiring young scientists and health care professionals. YIP is an eight-week paid summer internship that provides high school students the opportunity to work directly with faculty and graduate students’ mentors across UNC to gain hands-on research experience and pursue a mentored research project.

Research experiences span the spectrum of the drug discovery, development, and delivery cycle, and include areas such as preclinical and clinical development of therapeutic agents, optimum delivery of drug therapy, evaluation of health and therapeutic outcomes of novel drug therapies and technologies, as well as regulatory policies.

In addition to participating in hands-on research with UNC faculty and graduate student mentors, in order to provide a comprehensive view of STEM opportunities in pharmaceutical science research and the practice of pharmacy, interns participate in other activities, which include laboratory skills bootcamp, panel discussions, facility tours and workshops.
