Internal Auditing is an independent and objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve operations of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (University). The University’s Internal Audit Department (Department) helps the University accomplish its mission, goals, and objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.

The Department is guided by a philosophy of adding value to governance and operations of the University. The Department provides independent, pro-active analyses of governance, operations, financial activities, and systems of internal control in order to evaluate whether resources are used in a way that appropriately manages risk and is in keeping with State and Federal requirements, as well as the University’s mission, goals, and objectives.

The primary purpose of the Chief Audit Officer is to lead the Internal Audit Department. The Chief Audit Officer is responsible for ensuring that the work of the Internal Audit Department conforms to professional auditing standards and increases value to the institution by providing objective and relevant consulting services, risk management, and control processes that contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of governance. The Chief Audit Officer must also form strategic alliances with the University community – including senior leaders, board members, and external constituents – and be viewed by others as a respected and trusted advisor. This position reports administratively to the Chancellor and functionally to the UNC-CH Board of Trustees Finance, Infrastructure, and Audit Committee.

Ensure the independence and objectivity of the internal audit function and that all activity is carried out with proficiency and accuracy; conforming to the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards), Code of Ethics and Rules of Conduct. In collaboration with the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees’ (BOT’s) Finance, Infrastructure, and Audit Committee, establish an internal audit charter that is compatible with the BOT Finance, Infrastructure, and Audit Committee charter and consistent with the IIA Standards.

Educational Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required with 3 years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 5 years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Qualifications and Experience

CPA or CIA required; CISA or CFE preferred. Higher education experience preferred.

Skills/Attributes required – High level of integrity; demonstrated skills in supervision of a team, spoken and written communications to various groups and knowledge levels, ability to synthesize complex information into an accessible format for diverse constituencies, and experience briefing of executive committees or comparable groups. Demonstrated time management and organizational skills and abilities that promote successful outcomes.

Experience with operational, compliance, and information technology audits as well as investigations and management advisory services.

    Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.     Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
