Job Summary

The Commercial Music instructor reports to the Commercial Music, Visual and Performing Arts Department Chair. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to, classroom and lab instruction of Music Fundamentals, American Music, Class Piano, Synthesis, Video Editing, Video Production, Audio Post Production, Applied Commercial Piano, Applied Commercial Synthesis, Electronic Music, Film Scoring and Audio Engineering. Fluency in music technology software such as Logic, Reason, Pro Tools, and Sibelius is desirable. Provide professional leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, advise and recruit students, attend graduation ceremonies, participate in professional development activities, maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies, and work with the various administrative functions of the college. The Commercial Music instructor may be required to participate in off-campus recruiting and promotional activities and supervise students in off-campus intern positions. Performs other related work as assigned. Teaching assignment may include day and evening classes. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree from an accredited college. Five years of recent experience in the field and/or relevant teaching experience. Directly-related employment experience and/or certifications may be substituted for a portion of the education requirement. Ability to understand the teaching and evaluation methodologies used in the total instructional process. Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff members in a professional manner. Must demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Ability to plan, schedule, and manage projects and assignments. Ability to establish effective working relationships with others. Ability to clearly communicate. Must comply with established College rules and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s Degree with 18 graduate hours in the subject area is preferred for this position. A record of successful, professional experience in the music industry or film industry. The candidate will be very fluent in all aspects of the music industry, with a minimum of three to five years of professional experience. Experience as an arranger, performer, audio engineer, sound designer, songwriter, or composer enhances the candidate’s application.

Lamar State College - Port Arthur, a member of The Texas State University System, is an open-access, comprehensive public two-year college offering quality and affordable instruction leading to associate degrees and a variety of certificates.
