Full-time, tenure track faculty position.

Starting Salary Range: $55,703 to $85,443 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9.

Cabrillo College provides a generous doctoral stipend of $3,719 per year for eligible faculty.

Benefits: Cabrillo College currently provides a generous benefit stipend for employees plus dependents that employees apply towards benefit selections for medical, dental, life, and short-term/long-term disability insurance. Depending on health plan selections, in many cases full-time employee net out-of-pocket for benefit premiums may be $0 or otherwise relatively low.

Days Per Year: Faculty enjoy a 175-day work schedule.

Beginning Date: Position scheduled to begin coaching assignments on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 and teaching assignments on Monday, August 19, 2019, pending continued funding and Governing Board ratification. Assignments may include distance education courses, may be scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and may be scheduled at various campus locations; days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the Department:

Cabrillo College's Health, Athletics, Wellness and Kinesiology (HAWK) Division seeks a dynamic, innovative individual to serve as a Kinesiology Instructor and Head Coach for our Intercollegiate Women's Indoor and Beach Volleyball Teams. Students' health and welfare, sound academic progress, and ethical conduct are the foundation of our athletic programs. The department functions within the rules and regulations of the Coast Athletic Conference and the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA). There are five (5) contract faculty instructors in the Kinesiology Department, four (4) of whom are intercollegiate coaches. Cabrillo College offers intercollegiate athletic programs that reflect the interests and abilities of the college's student body and local high schools. Cabrillo College supports fifteen (15) intercollegiate athletic programs, seven (7) men's programs and eight (8) women's programs.

About the Position:

Cabrillo College expects and supports excellence. All faculty members are expected to enhance Cabrillo's state-wide reputation as a leader in shared governance through involvement in division, campus-wide and state committees and activities. Professional responsibilities include writing curriculum, program development, committee membership, student outreach, and attendance at HAWK department and division meetings.

The primary responsibility of this position will be as Head Coach of Cabrillo College's Intercollegiate Women's Indoor Volleyball team as well as our Beach Volleyball team; however, classes will also be assigned across the Kinesiology Discipline.

Examples of Duties

Coaching Assignments:

Coaching assignments are for an intercollegiate Head Indoor and Beach Volleyball Coach. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Consulting with the Associate Dean of Athletics to prepare the equipment and supply budget
  • Requesting and coordinating transportation needs
  • Developing daily and weekly practice and game plans/schedules
  • Scouting opponents and analyzing their game film
  • Promoting volleyball in Santa Cruz County and the Cabrillo College recruitment area
  • Recruiting student-athletes
  • Participating in athletic department public relations and fund-raising projects
Teaching Assignments:

Typical teaching assignments consist of seven (7) three-hour classes per week per semester. During the semester of competition, coaching is 50% of the assignment. The teaching assignment will include volleyball courses and may include, but are not limited to: first aid, weight training, athletic conditioning, and other kinesiology courses. Additional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
  • Providing instruction for assigned courses, which includes preparation for in-class or online/distance education activities, evaluation of students' work, consultation with students outside of class and/or on-line, and maintenance of currency in the subjects being taught
  • Maintaining accurate class and other records required by the college
  • Submitting attendance rosters and grade reports when due
  • Following course outlines as filed in the instruction office
  • Maintaining office hours each week
  • Observing, supporting, and enforcing regulations, policies, and programs of the District and college
  • Providing each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook
  • Referring students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services
  • Assisting students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement
  • Working cooperatively within the college community
  • Fostering an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community
  • Fostering an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community

  • Assessment of course student learning outcomes
  • Curriculum development
General:
  • Attendance at athletic department and HAWK division meetings.
  • Completion of required annual trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.
Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications:

  • Master's degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education OR
  • Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education AND a Master's degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy OR
  • The equivalent OR
  • A lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential in one of the above required fields
Equivalency

Candidates without the specified degrees listed above must complete and submit an Application for Equivalency Determination. Additionally, candidates must provide documentation, as part of this application process, sufficient to convince the committee that the candidate possesses the equivalent of these minimum qualifications, including the depth and breadth of discipline knowledge plus general education.

*Note: Graduate students currently working on a Master's degree are encouraged to apply, with the understanding that the degree must be completed and confirmed by July 1, 2019.

Required Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
  • Knowledge of:
    • Current theories and principles of intercollegiate volleyball
    • Skill learning progressions from beginning to advanced levels
    • Conditioning and weight training principles
  • Ability to:
    • Employ innovative teaching techniques and methodologies
    • Recruit local high school athletes within California Community College Athletic Associations parameters
    • Coach student athletes
    • Safely lift up to 40 pounds
Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
  • Recent successful teaching experience in Kinesiology and Athletics in a higher-education institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to employ innovative teaching techniques and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of culturally-responsive pedagogical teaching techniques and effective ways for engaging students who are historically under-represented and under-served.
  • Successful online teaching experience.
  • Credential and/or experience in personal training, physical fitness or wellness programming.
  • Experience developing and marketing new programs to diverse populations.
  • Innovation, development, and review of curriculum including assessments of learning.
  • First Aid and/or CPR Certification
