Library, Information, and Technology Services (LITS) at Mount Holyoke College seeks a diverse pool of applicants for the full-time position of Instructional Technologist for Arts and Media.

Position Summary Reporting to the Manager of Digital Pedagogy, the Instructional Technologist for Arts and Media collaborates with Mount Holyoke faculty and students at the intersection of teaching, learning, and technology. As a critical member of the Digital Pedagogy team within Research and Instructional Support (RIS), this person partners with colleagues on the implementation and support of new and existing campus technologies, and participates in the day-to-day work of the team. The Instructional Technologist collaborates with colleagues across LITS to ensure the integration and complementarity of support for LITS programs and services, especially those touching the arts.

The Instructional Technologist for Arts and Media will also be tasked with providing support for new and enhanced instructional technology services developed in connection with the College’s evolving maker culture, Arts and Technology Initiative, including the MEDIAL project made possible by a recent Sherman Fairchild Foundation grant. In collaboration with the Manager of Digital Pedagogy, faculty co-directors, and other campus partners, the Instructional Technologist will participate in the planned renovation and upgrade of the College’s media lab and production studio, help develop training for faculty, and support student users of the College’s various physical, digital, and performing art-making facilities.

Primary Position Responsibilities

1. Collaborates with faculty and students to support the design, implementation and assessment of meaningfully integrated technology skills and tools into teaching and learning activities at the College, especially in the arts.

2. Effectively develops, delivers, and assesses seminars, workshops, and other learning opportunities, both those integrated into regular courses and conducted independently for faculty and students.

3. Serves as a key source of support for media-intensive courses focusing on media production and editing.

4. Manages student employees who provide direct support to other students involved in media production. Actively works with the RIS team and colleagues in LITS to support student workers and ensure student staff positions foster connections between the curriculum and careers, while providing quality services to the Mount Holyoke community.

5. Keeps abreast of new trends, tools, opportunities, and campus needs in the areas of teaching, learning, and instructional technologies. Actively contributes to team effort to identify, plan, and implement the best solutions for Mount Holyoke.

6. Maintains a high level of quality customer service standards responding to questions and problems. Actively works to help the Digital Pedagogy group, RIS team and the College to create a welcoming environment in which a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff can thrive.

Required education and experience

• Bachelor’s degree.

• 3-5 years post-graduate experience providing instructional technology consulting, outreach, teaching, and support in an educational setting.

• Demonstrated expertise with two or more of the technologies currently in use by the digital media and arts faculty at Mount Holyoke, which include but are not limited to: digital audio, video and image capture and editing; Adobe Creative Suite; 3D printing and scanning; photogrammetry; computer-aided design and/or manufacturing (CAD and/or CAM) softwares; virtual, augmented, or mixed-reality technologies.

• Experience providing technical support to users of a learning management, data management, or content management system, or to creators of virtual exhibitions.

• A demonstrable willingness to experiment with emerging technologies in the course of one’s work.

• Interest in or commitment to an artistic, aesthetic, or maker practice.

Preferred qualifications

• Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.

• Technology skills, knowledge, or experience in more than one arts-related field or discipline.

• Past experience providing technical support for art installation or live performance.

• Experience using and/or supporting hardware and equipment used in arts-related disciplines.

• Familiarity with at least one programming or markup language (such as, but not limited to, HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, and/or PHP).

• Experience developing curriculum, training materials, or technical documentation.

• A working knowledge of trends and practices in contemporary art, film, and media.

Library, Information, and Technology Services (LITS) is committed to providing integrated library, information, and technology services and resources that enable students, faculty, and staff to creatively and productively advance the College’s academic, administrative, and co-curricular goals.

Research and Instructional Support (RIS) is a co-located group of librarians and instructional technology liaisons within LITS. RIS provides research support, information literacy programming, language learning support, library collections, and instructional technology support which advance excellence in teaching and learning. Within RIS, the Digital Pedagogy team facilitates the critical use of technologies in teaching and learning in a primarily residential setting. The team develops and supports a suite of foundational technology offerings, including the learning management system, videoconferencing, and content creation platforms, while also collaborating with faculty to introduce, foster, support and expand innovative uses of technologies in classrooms across campus. The team plays a key role in the campus’s Arts and Technology Initiative; works closely with the campus Makerspace community; is building capacity in data services for faculty and students; and partners with other LITS units on the effective deployment of technology in classrooms and labs.
