Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Political Science Department at Saddleback College seeks a dynamic professor who desires to create an interactive classroom environment, and support the growth of the department. The candidate’s primary assignments may include teaching online, hybrid, or night courses, including but not limited to American Government, Comparative Politics, and International Relations. Additionally, the candidate will be encouraged to take on leadership roles within the department, and support curriculum changes and modifications.

 

Minimum Qualifications:    

For this position, employees must have at least one of the following: 

1. Master’s degree or higher in political science, government, or international relations from an accredited college or university; OR 

2. Bachelor’s degree in any of the above from an accredited college or university, AND a Master’s degree or higher in economics, history, public administration, social science, sociology, any ethnic studies, JD, or LLB from an accredited college or university; OR 

3. Valid California Community College instructor credential appropriate to the subject per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR 

4. A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above.

 

Experience Required:

• A minimum of two (2) years of recent and successful experience teaching American Government and other Political Science courses at the post secondary level.

• Knowledge and ability to offer and support multiple modes of instruction including in-person, hybrid, and online courses.

• Ability to communicate clearly with students and staff; both orally and in-writing.

• Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

 

Desired Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a high level of professional expertise on the basis of:

• The ability to bring relevant research and scholarship experiences into the community college classroom.

• Knowledge of and an ability to integrate instructional technology in the classroom and to be able to use such technology to offer curriculum and support student learning through diverse delivery modes, as appropriate. 

• Possess skills as a facilitator of the learning process, and an understanding of different instructional modalities to match different student learning styles.

• Demonstrates experience in developing lower-division curriculum at the college/university level.

• The ability to coordinate co-curricular and extra-curricular activities related to political science at the community college level.
