The Valley Foundation School of Nursing at San Jose State University invites applications for two full-time tenure track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level for the DNP program beginning Fall 2019. Candidates for the position must have experience that is consistent with the DNP program goals and must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching, particularly including expertise in online pedagogy and the use of technology. The potential for expanding a currently active research program in the candidate’s area of specialization is also required.
Required Qualifications: A Doctorate in nursing or the relevant field of expertise (e.g. DNSc, DrPH, EdD, DNP, PhD, DHS) is required for appointment. For RN applicants, a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing is required with a Master’s degree that includes coursework in nursing, nursing education or administration. Possession of, or eligibility for, RN licensure in California is also required. Faculty with expertise in statistics, epidemiology, or information technology who are not RNs will also be considered for relevant courses. Applicants must have experience in graduate education and excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to work well with teams. Applicants should demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.
Preferred Qualifications: One year of teaching experience in a DNP nurse education program is preferred. Previous experience in development of new courses at the Master’s or doctoral level is preferred with attention to the DNP Essentials as well as experience in working with accreditation or regulatory agencies. For RN applicants, national certification in at least one specialty. Experience in online teaching, informatics and/or information technology, health care policy, and advanced practice as a nurse practitioner and/or clinical nurse specialist. An established pattern of scholarly and professional achievements (e.g., research, publications, presentations). The successful candidate will provide leadership and vision for future curriculum development. Applicants will demonstrate team work.
Responsibilities: Major responsibilities include: participation with DNP program faculty in planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the DNP program; curriculum development and implementation in online courses; academic advisement for assigned DNP students; participation in screening of DNP program applicants; DNP program meetings and department/school/campus committees as assigned; participation directly in DNP Scholarly Project development and/or DNP Committee activities; advancement of the DNP role through scholarly activities.
Teaching responsibilities will include primarily online teaching with one on campus intensive session each semester. Further responsibilities include a commitment to teaching and participation in evidence-based practice and advanced nursing research; maintaining clinical expertise. Teaching effectiveness, scholarly/professional achievement, and service to students and university are required for retention, tenure, and promotion. Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Valley Foundation School of Nursing is in the College of Health and Human Sciences. The School offers Baccalaureate, Master’s, and Doctor of Nursing Practice nursing education programs. The programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. The School also has a Wound and Ostomy program and several Nurse Managed Centers in the community. The School has an emphasis in the use of clinical simulation in its programs.
