Graphic Design Instructor

Position Description:

The Art + Art History Department of Florida International University seeks an artist/designer with a significant creative practice and/or research to teach courses in Graphic Design, and to provide leadership in the development and shaping of a design curriculum in an environment committed to critical inquiry across disciplines. An ability to address current design concerns such as interactivity, user-centered innovation, environmental, experience-based and/or social design is desirable. Interest and experience in design history, founding studio practices such as typography, letterpress or printmaking are also advantageous. This is a full-time, non-tenure earning Instructor position to commence in August 2019.

Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of exceptional teaching and ability to engage in the theoretical and critical discourses of contemporary art and design in practice and pedagogy. The candidate should have an innovative vision for curriculum development that capitalizes upon the transformative capacity of design in a global context. Salary is competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with quality and output of teaching experience, and creative practice.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Teach courses primarily in visual communication/graphic design, and including undergraduate independent studies and thesis
  • Develop design curricula emphasizing a diversity of conceptual and technical practices
  • Mentoring, and service to the department and University
  • Ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and interacting with all studio students in critiques and studio visits

 

Qualifications: Required

  • MFA degree from an accredited institution with an emphasis in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Studio Art, or equivalent degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of historical and contemporary trends in the field of graphic design
  • Expertise in digital technologies for design

 

Qualifications: Preferred

  • A minimum of three years teaching experience at the university level
  • Experience as a practicing graphic designer
  • Experience with creating/teaching web design, UI/UX design, and other emerging technologies
  • Experience with teaching the integration of new technologies across disciplines
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research and practice linking art and design to other fields in the humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and technology
  • A demonstrated concern for global perspective and ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the university's continuing commitment to cultural diversity

The FIU Art + Art History Department provides a sanctuary for the development of new visions, ideas, and techniques. Studio art majors will have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of disciplines acquiring basic and advanced skills while exploring a wide range of new possibilities. Art Education majors go through a rigorous program of study which includes studio practice, theoretical and pedagogical training. Students of Art History will learn the research methodology, theory, and criticism necessary for careers in contemporary practice. The interactivity of our Studio Art, Art Education and Art History programs helps students define their own roles as artists, art educators and art historians in today’s world. This communal atmosphere encourages artistic camaraderie, engendering trust and a climate conducive to intellectual and aesthetic growth. We provide many opportunities for each student, including visiting artist seminars, workshops, and study abroad programs. The FIU Art + Art History Department is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Located on the main campus in southwest Miami-Dade County, our department serves a truly international population of local residents and those who come from all over the world, especially from many European, Latin American, and Caribbean countries. South Florida is garnering much attention from the international art community for such events as Art Basel, Art Miami, and Art Palm Beach. Both faculty and students of the department are regular participants in their many projects.
