Purpose of Job

The Assistant Farm Manager will work under the supervision of the Farm Manager and will assist in carrying out all farm activities in connection with the operation of the farm such as:
•Assist in the implementation of horticultural/agronomic practices required for the production, harvesting, packing and maintenance of crops as outlined in the farm plan, and perform all farm-related activities in connection with the operation of the Incubator program.
•Assist in identifying working partnerships with relevant local organizations, agencies and institutions to deliver educational programs, events and activities.
•Assist with all crop production practices
•Assist with harvesting of all crops
•Assist with pruning, spraying chemicals on crops, and storage of farm produce
•Assist with the upkeep of the research facility and all farm equipment
•Carry out other duties as assigned
•Must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing mission of the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences
•Must possess and maintain a Mississippi Driver’s License
•Must adhere to all safely standards and work practices set by Alcorn State University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences
•Should be well organized and able to work independently without close supervision

Scope of Responsibilities Essential Job Functions

•Mow grass and trims with power mowers and other power tools
•Weed research plots as directed
•Remove dead branches, prunes, and maintains fruit plots
•Assisting with field preparation
•Assisting in all crop production practices
•Assisting with mowing the grass and keeping field free of weeds

Qualifications

•Minimum of 10 years of crop production experience in horticulture/agronomy related field
•Minimum of 10 years of work experience with farmers and producers in communities
•Possess a valid driver’s license and is required to participate in educational demonstrations, programs, events and activities regarding the Extension Program

Licensing and Certifications Knowledge Skills and Abilities

•Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and other partners involved in the Incubator Program activities.
•Ability to work within the overall organization of Alcorn State University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences
•Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and the ability to express ideas effectively and concisely.
•Must be willing to seek training to enhance or learn new skills.
