Job Description:

The University of San Francisco is seeking a database administrator to join our hands-on production support team. The Database Administrator will provide administration, implementation, development, security, and maintenance for databases supporting our system of record, Banner.

This position will provide technical expertise in the setup, implementation, and maintenance of relational database management systems and associated applications that support mission-critical resources for University business.

The position monitors and tunes databases to insure optimal performance and insures proper security, integrity, and recovery of data. The database administrator is responsible for upgrades and patches to our Banner ERP ecosystem. This will include Oracle-based technologies such as database servers, application servers as well as business and learning applications.

This position will also keep abreast of enhancements to both the database environment and to the application product(s) in order to present relevant information to team members and will coordinate system outages with the team leader to minimize disruption to the campus.


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, upgrade, optimize, and maintain Oracle-based technologies, including but not limited to: Oracle Databases, Oracle Forms and Reports, Oracle Application Servers

  • Maintain and upgrade ERP modules and applications that are part of the Ellucian Banner ERP ecosystem

  • Perform monitoring and tuning of the relational database management system(s) and related application database(s)

  • Document and implement procedures for database backup and recovery using various technologies

  • Develop, maintain, and implement procedures to guarantee the accuracy, accessibility and responsiveness of the database environment, ensuring optimal database performance and availability including the identification, analysis, and resolution of complex database issues

  • Provide assistance to applications developers in the effective use of database query and programming languages

  • Provide technical advice and recommendations to departments requesting specialized support or services

  • Become a resource on a variety of database integration issues including migration between disparate databases, data conversion, capacity planning, interface building to other databases and new application deployments

  • Maintenance of the Ellucian Banner source code using tools such as Subversion and Git

Other Responsibilities:

  • Perform and document day to day operations and complex technical systems, processes, and procedures

  • Coordinate physical changes to databases and code trees with guidance and acceptance from the functional users

  • Perform routine SQL code and table indexing reviews

  • Help in the definition and development of database standards, procedures, and architectural changes

  • Research and recommend new methodologies and technologies to maintain a state of the art system and infrastructure

  • Participate in 24x7 production support on-call rotation

  • Manage tasks and duties that align with project goals and timelines

  • Maintain and improve skills through self-study, seminars, and workshops

  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or other computer-related field, or equivalent enterprise experience
  • 2 to 5 years of Oracle administration experience running mission-critical services
  • Experience in installation, deployment, or maintenance of computer applications in Unix/Linux and Windows environments
  • Strong understanding of both SQL and PL/SQL
  • Strong understanding of Unix/Linux shell scripting
  • Strong analytical skills, problem-solving skills and the ability to perform in pressure situations
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures used in maintaining an enterprise relational database management system
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a professional manner with an emphasis for service quality
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to express ideas concisely and clearly to both technical and non-technical clients
  • Must be able to respect confidentiality and exercise discretion when working with sensitive data

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in a higher education environment
  • Experience supporting the Ellucian Banner ERP suite
  • Experience with authentication systems such as LDAP, CAS or SAML
  • Experience administering Tomcat and other middleware technologies
  • Strong understanding of ITIL standards and processes
  • Experience with Operational Data Store, Data Marts, and/or Data Warehousing
  • Oracle Certified Professional
