Market Research Analyst

Duke Learning Innovation helps Duke students learn more, and helps more people to learn from Duke. We offer flexible online learning opportunities for Duke students, for the extended community of alumni and prospective students, and to extend Duke's global impact. We seek a Market Research Analyst to develop market insights and recommendations for new online and hybrid education programs for learners at Duke and around the world. This is an opportunity for a creative, entrepreneurial individual with strong market research and data analysis skills to inform new curricular and marketing strategies for digital education at Duke.

Position Summary
Duke Learning Innovation's Market Research Analyst develops market insights and opportunities for new online courses, programs, certificates and/or degrees. They represent the voice and needs of learners in our planning and will help answer such questions as: What do learners need to know? What skills are most in demand? What new programs should Duke offer?

With a passion for market research, the analyst collects, synthesizes and analyzes qualitative and quantitative data relevant to graduate and professional education (e.g., workforce trends, job market data, prospective students and alumni and the digital education competitive landscape), evaluates new educational program ideas and presents recommendations to inform the direction of Duke's online learning strategy.

Responsibilities
  • Provides data-driven analysis and marketing insights that identify new target learner markets and shape recommendations for new online courses, programs, certificates and degrees
  • Collects, synthesizes and analyzes quantitative and qualitative data such as labor market statistics, job market demand and trends, prospective students' and alumni educational needs, demand for educational product concepts and the digital education competitive landscape
  • Produces competitive landscape analyses and evaluations of the marketing strengths of educational offerings
  • Conducts surveys and focus groups of target audiences, such as prospective students and employers
  • Develops standardized and custom reports for market research projects
  • Presents data-driven narratives and visualizations to inform a customer-centric approach to professional and graduate education at Duke
  • Collaborates with the Communications Strategist to develop =marketing strategies and campaigns for online programs
  • Follows market trends and peer institution marketing efforts to help Duke identify and implement best practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education
Required: BA/BS

Preferred: BA/BS in economics, statistics, business, marketing or related field.
Experience
Required:
  • Qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills
  • Experience carrying out market research projects, including competitive landscape analysis, evaluating new product concepts, identifying new revenue opportunities, market segmentation, surveys and focus groups
  • Ability to synthesize and interpret data from a variety of sources and present findings in a cohesive, actionable way for a variety of audiences (e.g., program administrators, financial officers, heads of marketing, faculty, instructional design teams, etc.)
  • Ability to develop well-written, presentable, concise reports communicating research findings, including good use of data visualizations
  • Expertise in digital marketing strategy, analytics, lead generation and associated tools
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision

Preferred:
  • Experience working in higher education; familiarity or experience with trends in educational technology, emerging online education models and issues in higher education
  • Experience with carrying out market research to identify new target markets and new products
  • Passion for approaching market research with business acumen
  • Experience with marketing analytics, marketing automation (email marketing, etc) and inbound marketing
  • Knowledge of statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R, or similar) and databases
  • Knowledge of major third-party suppliers of education and labor market data (e.g., Burning Glass, EMSI, Bureau of Labor Statistics, National Center for Education Statistics, etc.)

Education

Bachelors degree in statistics, business or related field is required.Masters degree preferred.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B. Duke, created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.Duke Campus

As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent both physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became known as East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. East Campus served as home of the Woman's College of Duke University until 1972, when the men's and women's undergraduate colleges merged. Both men and women undergraduates now enroll in either the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. In 1995, East Campus became the home for all first-year students.
