LABORATORY SUPERVISOR / COORDINATOR

Scope of Job:
To provide responsible supervisory and technical skills for the distribution, oversight, and maintenance of supplies and equipment in departmental laboratories.
Responsible for the supervision of all aspects of the operations of scientific teaching laboratories and maintaining thorough knowledge of safety regulations, and departmental/university regulations, policies, and procedures.

Description of Duties:
• Supervises teaching assistants, lab instructors and other lab personnel in academic science labs, technology labs, service delivery labs, or clinical labs.

• Depending on the type of lab being supervised, will perform one or more of the following duties:

• Schedules lab sections for teaching assistants/lab instructors.

• Prepares training modules and training evaluation materials.

• Designs lab lay-out, schedule or perform lab set-ups and tear-downs.

• Maintains, inspects and supervises laboratory classrooms for safety regulation compliance, security, and equipment maintenance.

• Coordinates reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.

• Ensures proper labeling of chemicals and proper disposal of chemicals, broken glassware and laboratory specimens.

• Recommends equipment purchases for labs.

• Maintains equipment, supplies and chemicals inventory and order as needed.

• Oversees completion of employment paperwork for laboratory instructors and employees.

• Maintains participant records.

• Develops laboratory syllabi.

• May perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General direction from the assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
May supervise assigned staff.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field appropriate to the type of lab.

Preferred Education:
Master’s degree in a related field appropriate to the type of lab.

Licenses/Certifications:
None.

Required Experience:
Two (2) years experience in the preparation of teaching materials, laboratory supervision or laboratory instruction.

Preferred Experience:
N/A

Equipment:
In science labs: spectrophotometer, ph meter, water bath, other standard laboratory equipment; other type labs: equipment as may be appropriate for the particular type of lab.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Normal laboratory conditions. Sometimes requires working with hazardous equipment and materials or in hazardous environments.

Other:
Particular project or program may require ability to drive a car for local or distant travel for consultation, training, meetings, or on site demonstrations.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
