Job FieldThe Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications from outstanding scholars for a tenure-stream position, at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Global Engineering. The target start date for this appointment is July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter.

We strongly encourage innovative, diverse and interdisciplinary approaches to the field of engineering that make an impact on the world’s most vulnerable people, and seek applications from emerging leaders that relate to one or more of the following strategic research areas: 1. Information Technologies for Global Development; 2. Food and Nutrition Security; 3. Engineering and Human Health; 4. Sustainability. Successful candidates will hold a budgetary cross-appointment between the Centre for Global Engineering (CGEN) (https://cgen.utoronto.ca/) as part of the Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice and one of the following academic units: Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry; Department of Civil Engineering; Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; Institute for Aerospace Studies; Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering.

Applicants must have a PhD in an engineering discipline, or a relevant field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. The selection will be based on an applicant’s demonstrated excellence in research and teaching, as well as the emerging global impact of their research program. The successful candidate is expected to pursue independent, innovative research at the highest international level, establish a self-funded research program, supervise graduate students, and publish articles in internationally recognized top-tier journals in the related field. Candidates must provide evidence of excellent research of an internationally competitive caliber, as evidenced by publication in leading journals in the field, or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, presentations at significant conferences, accolades for creative work, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing. In addition, experience as a post-doctoral fellow or related industry experience is desired. The successful candidate must also demonstrate teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate program levels. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference and the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations, submitted as part of the application. The Faculty is especially interested in individuals who can demonstrate a commitment to innovative undergraduate teaching and engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
