Job FieldThe Division of Engineering Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a continuing teaching stream appointment in the field of engineering design education. The appointment will be to the Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education & Practice (ISTEP) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an expected start date of July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter.

The Division seeks applications from individuals who combine demonstrated expertise in, and passion for engineering design, with demonstrated excellence in engineering education. Applicants are expected to have a PhD in an engineering discipline at the time of appointment or soon after. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate program level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. The successful applicant will have a balance of theoretical and practical design knowledge in domains such as product design, electromechanical design, and software design. They will also have completed multiple engineering design projects, preferably in a leadership role. In the classroom the successful applicant will have applied an engineering approach to designing, delivering, and improving innovative student learning experiences.

Evidence of excellence in engineering education, teaching, and pedagogical inquiry will be demonstrated through letters of reference endorsing excellent teaching and commitment to teaching innovation, teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, and the teaching dossier, including a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations, submitted as part of the application.

Applicants must have, or be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada.

Engineering Science is an accredited undergraduate teaching division within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. The Division has a reputation for innovative engineering pedagogy that integrates theoretical rigour with engineering practicality. Students in Engineering Science take two years of Foundation curriculum followed by two year of discipline-specific Major curriculum. Engineering design education – both theoretical and practical – is woven throughout both the Foundation and Majors. The successful applicant will teach engineering design in multiple courses across all years of the program, and will contribute to the ongoing development of the Division’s engineering design curriculum. They will also collaborate with other Engineering Science instructors to integrate engineering design more broadly across the Division and its curriculum. The ideal applicant will also be qualified to teach introductory computer programming using a design-inspired approach.
