    Position Overview:
    The Director of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is a full-time, benefitted, 12-month pay plan, exempt position. This position is an Administrator III in the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP). Under this plan, incumbents are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the pleasure of the University President.     Working independently under the general direction of the President of the University and in collaboration with the University's faculty, staff, administration, and local community, the Athletics Director is responsible for the leadership, organization, and management of an 11-sport, NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics program that provides a quality educational experience and supports success for student-athletes in the classroom and on the field, track, and court. HSU is committed to providing equal opportunities to male and female students in all campus programs, including intercollegiate athletics. Competing in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA), Humboldt State Lumberjack intercollegiate teams have earned many conference, region, and national championships over the years.


    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Working within the mission and vision of HSU, the Athletics Director:

  • Sets the expectation for coaches and student athletes that performance in the classroom is the primary purpose of higher education and that pursuit of knowledge and earning a degree is the main goal of a student athlete;
  • Develops and implements external fundraising, marketing, and public relations activities in coordination with the University's Advancement Office and Marketing and Communications team;
  • Prepares and manages the annual budget, including the scholarship program;
  • Ensures compliance with NCAA, CCAA, California State University, and University regulations;
  • Oversees the recruitment, educational progress, and academic success of student athletes;
  • Supervises coaches, staff, and administrative personnel, including the Associate Athletic Director and Sports Information Director;
  • Participates in University-wide governance and athletics advisory groups;
  • Engages in the governance and leadership of the NCAA and the CCAA; and
  • Participates in community events and activities.


    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:

    The candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in sports administration, business management, or public administration or related field.A master's degree, coaching experience and familiarity with NCAA regulations is preferred;
  • Five years of progressively responsible, related administration experience that includes leadership and direct supervision of employees, and managing complex budgets;
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of intercollegiate athletics and sports management within higher education and an understanding of the role of intercollegiate athletics at a state-supported CSU system institution that is preparing socially and environmentally responsible leaders to make a positive difference in the world;
  • Demonstrated commitment to a program of academic and athletic excellence;
  • A successful record of and commitment to promoting diversity and gender equality; and
  • A successful record of long-range planning in a complex organization.

    Critical Success Factors:
  • Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills;
  • Proven expertise in external revenue generation, fundraising and marketing skills, and community relations;
  • Strong fiscal management skills;
  • Ability to select and mentor talented coaches and administrative staff;
  • Thorough knowledge of NCAA and CCAA rules, with ability to interpret and apply NCAA and conference regulations with integrity;
  • Ability to develop strong collaborations across the University and within the larger communities in the region;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; and
  • Strong public relations skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience coaching an intercollegiate athletics program
  • Direct experience working with media relations
  • Well-developed public speaking skills

    Compliance with the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 (EO 1083) is a condition of employ-ment. CSU employees in positions with duties that involve regular contact with children or positions which supervise such employees are designated as Mandated Reporters under CANRA and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in EO 1083. Upon appointment to this position, the successful candidate(s) will be notified of and required to acknowledge their CANRA reporting status.

    Additionally, all CSU staff and faculty receive training annually on their obligations in responding to and reporting incidents of sexual harassment and sexual violence. You will be notified by email when you are required to take this mandated training.

    New faculty employees hired by the CSU for the first time who first become CalPERS members on or after July 1, 2017 are subject to a 10-year vesting period for retiree health and dental benefits. Staff employees covered under bargaining agreements 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, C99, E99, M80 and M9 hired by the CSU for the first time who first become CalPERS members on or after July 1, 2018 are subject to a 10-year vesting period for retiree health and dental benefits
