Basic Life Research Scientist

Stanford University

Job Number:
81662

About the position:

The Foung Lab in the Pathology Department is seeking a Research Scientist with a Ph.D. in molecular biology. The candidate should have expertise in phage or yeast display, cDNA cloning, gene expression, techniques in mammalian cell culture for adherent and nonadherent cells for virus infectivity studies, and immunochemical assays. These assays include flow cytometry, immunofluorescence assays, ELISA, Western blot, and other cell-based assays. The Scientist should be capable of functioning independently under the day-to-day supervision of the Senior Scientist and the overall direction of the Principal Investigator. The Scientist will maintain meticulous records, develop and maintain familiarity with the relevant literature, assist with general laboratory management tasks, and comply with governmental regulations and university policies regarding health and safety practices.
About the Foung Laboratory
The focus of the Foung Laboratory is to define immune correlates of protection against hepatitis C virus and other viral pathogens. More specifically, our goal is to define protective humoral immunity to viral pathogens through the isolation, biochemical and functional characterization of broadly neutralizing human or nonhuman primate monoclonal antibodies. These efforts will create high-resolution, functional maps of linear and nonlinear epitopes comprising the major binding sites of both isolate-specific and broadly neutralizing antibodies for rational vaccine design.
About the Department of Pathology
Comprised of extraordinary faculty and staff, our mission is to improve the ability to diagnose, treat and understand the origin and manifestations of human disease, and to care for those who have or are at risk to develop disease. We accomplish this through our clinical services (in all fields of anatomic and clinical pathology, including molecular and genomic pathology, histocompatibility testing, and transfusion medicine) and by research (which includes basic, translational and clinical research into the origins and manifestations of disease, including efforts to improve disease prediction and prevention as part of the goal of achieving precision medicine and health), and also by educating future leaders in pathology and related fields. Everything we do is to achieve the goals of providing the highest quality of clinical services to the patients for whom we passionately care, to advance our ability to understand, diagnose, monitor and ultimately to cure disease or to prevent or delay its occurrence, and to provide outstanding education and career development opportunities to those who share these goals.
