Job Details

The Paralegal is responsible for administering the College's compliance and risk management programs, including risk assessments, mitigation plans, policies and procedures, College-wide training, and compliance reviews.

Under the guidance of Counsel and in conjunction with other institutional stakeholders, the paralegal is also responsible for drafting, reviewing, revising, and negotiating institutional contracts and agreements, and assisting in the administration and oversight of the contract review process.

Under the supervision of the Vice President & General Counsel:

  • Refine and administer the College's enterprise risk management program to identify, assess, and address institutional risks
  • Partner with departments and maintain relationships to enhance the institutional culture pertaining to compliance and risk management
  • Effectively address compliance obligations and mitigate emerging risks while advancing the College's strategic goals
  • Coordinate compliance with applicable international, federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Prepare and assist with regulatory filings
  • Develop and implement processes to track deadlines for relevant licenses, permits, and approvals
  • Assist in reviewing, drafting, and implementing institutional policies pertaining to compliance and risk management
  • Remain current with regulatory topics and best practices regarding compliance within higher education
  • Draft, review, revise, and negotiate contracts and agreements under attorney supervision and ensure compliance with College policies and procedures
  • Coordinate the legal review process for contracts and assist in the tracking of key institutional agreements
  • Facilitate efficient interdepartmental communications to promptly resolve outstanding contractual issues, inquiries and actions
  • Recognize opportunities for program improvements and collaborate with functional areas to enhance and streamline the contracting process
  • Conduct and support regular compliance and risk management training for the College community
  • Serve as liaison between legal, business, and other internal units to support contract operations
  • Independently research and analyze legal sources such as statutes, judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes and provide summaries/memoranda to the VP & General Counsel and/or Associate General Counsel as requested
  • Interface with outside legal counsel, as necessary, and makes recommendation based on information received
  • Provides first-line advice to various College constituencies
  • Obtain information from governmental offices and websites (e.g., Secretary of State's office) when needed for various projects/matters
  • Assume additional duties and responsibilities as required
Education Requirements:

Minimum Level of Education Bachelor's Degree Required

Paralegal Certificate Preferred

Position Knowledge/Skills & Abilities Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience as a paralegal and experience in risk management, compliance and/or contract administration
  • Extensive knowledge of enterprise risk management and compliance programs, policies, methods, standards, processes, and risk analysis approaches
  • Strong working knowledge of regulations governing colleges and universities
  • Experience in building, leading and delivering compliance and risk programs, assessments and scenario analyses
  • Experience working with complex contracts, legal concepts and compliance solutions
  • Experience identifying gaps in contracts and processes, researching and implementing best practices
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, and ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality at all times
  • Ability to work with all constituencies with tact and diplomacy
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously with timeliness, thoroughness and accuracy
  • Ability to envision and propose new methods to perform tasks that support Entrepreneurial Thought & Action (ET&A); takes thoughtful risks; and accepts new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.
  • Thorough knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and slide presentation software and ability to address general computer issues
  • Ability to anticipate and embrace change; demonstrate willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and flexibility in changing conditions.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, editing, and proofreading skills
