Visiting Assistant Professor - Mathematical Sciences
Claremont McKenna College (CMC) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in mathematical sciences at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2019. This is a joint position shared equally between the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Quantitative and Computing Lab (QCL). QCL is the transdisciplinary campus hub and support center for students and faculty seeking assistance with a broad spectrum of quantitative issues, including mathematics, computation, statistics, programming, and data analysis and visualization. The duties will include teaching one course per semester in the department and performing mentoring and consulting services equivalent to another course load at the QCL. Research area for this position is open, but preference may be given to candidates with expertise in quantitative and computational practices including data science, machine learning, statistics, and closely related areas. The successful candidate should hold or expect to receive a Ph.D. by August 2019 in either mathematical sciences (broadly defined), computer science, or operations research, and have a demonstrated active research program and the highest standards of excellence in teaching. In addition to this, skills needed for consulting at the QCL include:
• Demonstrated excellence in mentoring undergraduate students in quantitative and computing areas
• Knowledge of statistics, data science and computer science at least on the level of undergraduate curriculum
• Fluency with mathematical and statistical software environments, such as R, STATA, MATLAB, and Maple
• Fluency with programming and scripting languages such as Python, Java, C/C++, and shell scripting
• Familiarity with cloud and high-performance computing environment such as XSEDE supercomputers and GPU systems
The duration of the position is two years with a possible extension for one more year, pending satisfactory performance and budgetary approval. In addition to the competitive salary, the position comes with some annual support for travel and professional development activities.
