Position Description: Prepares or reviews the university's federal, state and local tax returns and filings, including Form 990 and 990T and state returns relating to unrelated business income. Oversees preparation and maintains list of filing requirements for charitable solicitation returns for all states. Supports year-end close and audit schedule preparation including: confirmations; lead schedules; variance analysis; release of restriction; financial report drafts including preparation of charts, graphs, and exhibits. Researches and provides advice on various tax and GAAP issues to campus constituents in coordination with Director of Finance.
Responsibilities: Tax:
    Coordinate and review state and city excise and local B&O and admission tax returns to include researching and providing advice on state and local laws and rules. Research and inform appropriate personnel on changes to excise tax laws and rules that would impact the university. Prepare form 990 information return. Coordinate preparation of 990T and state income tax returns and required extension requests including reconciliation of all K-1 partnership information from limited partnership investments relating to unrelated business income in coordination with accounting firm contracted to prepare the 990T and state tax returns. Prepare real and personal property exemption filing reports and tax exemption and valuation applications for new construction projects or property use changes. Perform analysis of certain university rental and sales activities to determine any unrelated business income (UBI) impact as needed for annual 990T reporting, property tax exemption, and private business use for tax-exempt status, and when required for proposed activities. Prepare 1042-S; coordinate preparation payment of withholding tax for payments made to non-resident aliens. Update property rental fee schedule with tax appraised value and distribute to Payroll.
Charitable Solicitation Returns
    Review state requirements periodically to determine if filing requirements in each state have changed and prepare required applications, as applicable. Prepare annual filings with required attachments, including extensions to conform with Form 990 filing dates
Fiscal Year End Close and Annual Audit
    Prepare draft financial statements including notes and related graphs. Coordinate preparation, updates, and timely distribution of lead schedules and trial balances. Prepare audit schedules and related analysis, calculations, and disclosures, including releases of net asset restrictions and restrictions on net assets, and work with Senior Financial Accountant on required disclosure for endowment net assets. Continually assess the adequacy of and educate constituents on the importance of maintaining effective internal controls. Identify opportunities to strengthen internal controls and recommend/implement improvements.
Financial Reporting
    Prepare annual Associated Students University of Puget Sound (ASUPS) financial statements and provide accounting support to ASUPS.
Other:
    Provide backup for cash receipting, endowment monthly processing, non-cash gift receipts, and other accounting activities as required. Advise campus community on rules/regulations surrounding fundraising and raffle activities. Maintain, monitor and follow-up on account reconciliations to insure they are prepared and reconciled to the general ledger and report results to the Director of Finance. Assist campus community, as needed.

Qualifications:
    Requires a bachelor's degree and current WA CPA license (or ability to transfer current license from another state). Requires significant, increasingly complex accounting and tax knowledge and experience including research and application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and federal, state, and local tax rules with a preference of the application of these skills to not-for-profit/tax-exempt organizations. Requires knowledge of and experience with the preparation of tax returns to be able to support tax compliance and financial statement reporting activities of the university. Higher education or non-profit organization accounting experience is very desirable. Requires excellent writing and proofreading skills. Must demonstrate initiative, self-direction, ownership of projects, ability to meet deadlines, attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and excellent organization, follow-through, and problem solving skills. Requires a quick and continuous learner. Must have superior aptitude for and skill with technology, including learning new technology, understanding databases, and using Microsoft Word and Excel, or other database reporting tools. Ability to work in cooperation with other team members and constituents to achieve the university's goals and objectives. Ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously and respond positively to changing circumstances. Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.
