Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

Serves the Sam Houston State University Proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Biomedical Sciences Department as key faculty for basic and clinical sciences in an integrated curriculum. Acts as a role model for medical students interested in Pathology. The position reports to the Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences. The proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine is currently in applicant status and is seeking accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. The university will focus on primary care and other specialties identified as a physician workforce shortage in the State of Texas, and has developed an integrated curriculum merging basic science instruction with clinical learning including an osteopathic emphasis.

The Pathology Faculty will assist the Associate Dean for Biomedical Sciences in development of the curriculum related to histology and pathology in basic science and systems courses. Pathology faculty will also be expected to teach in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course, relate pathological aspects diagnosis and care in systems courses, pursue scholarship and research in the department and foster collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. Pathology faculty will be expected to participate in lectures, case-based learning sessions and preparation for clerkships as appropriate. The person selected must be comfortable working in preclinical and clinical education, as well as the evaluation of curriculum and students through various learning and assessment methods.

Educational Requirements for the Position

The successful candidate will have either a DO/MD degree from an accredited medical school with residency training in Pathology, current AOA or ABMS board certification or eligibility, and eligibility for, or a current license to practice in Texas or may have a PhD in Pathology or a related field.

Experience Required for the Position

A background in medical education is preferred with experience working in a pathology department at a medical school or residency setting. A desire to teach at the Undergraduate Medical Education level is necessary.

Other Requirements for the Position

Ability to communicate and work with other faculty, medical students, physician preceptors and college administration. Possession of excellent written and verbal communication skills and capacity to demonstrate personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment are essential.
