Position Summary:

Five College’s Human Resources Functions are currently administered through Smith College. This is a Five Colleges Inc. position.

The IT Specialist (Specialist) works closely with the Director of IT and other IT personnel to ensure, as assigned, optimal operations of all FCI infrastructure. The Specialist supports and maintains FCI information systems, equipment, and databases. The Specialist assists in building, implementing, maintaining, training, and supporting all internal information technology systems.   Internal support includes monitoring systems, user support, system and user documentation, integration, security, and compliance with FCI IT policies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Specific Duties:

  • Provide technical support as assigned to FCI, including coordination, vendor relations, maintenance, and support of hardware, software (including specialty servers) and FCI systems and services.
  • Serve as primary or initial contact for FCI staff requests for technology hardware, software, maintenance contracts, network support, training, and documentation.
  • Work with users to increase their technical competency.
  • Track IT equipment owned and operated by FCI – including inventory, transfers, and re-purposing.
  • Serve as liaison between FCI staff members and the five member institutions’ help desk and support groups.
  • Assist Director of IT with implementation of hardware and software, new technologies, and procurement.
  • Ensure the timely set-up of equipment, accounts, software licensing (with Director of IT approval) and software installation/configuration for new, transitioning, and departing employees.
  • Support Six-Museum Collaboration on the use and operations of museum collections management system (currently Mimsy and Mobius) including installation and configuration, account provisioning, security, modification of user interface, and custom reporting.
  • Support FCI business office users (current systems – Blackbaud financial system, outsourced payroll system), providing technical advice on new projects and solutions.
  • Coordinate and implement operation and activities related to the internet, IT policies, support procedures, related training, and assigned project development/management.
  • Coordinate IT-related purchasing, shipping and receiving, and inventorying.
  • Coordinate subscriber management of all FCI electronic lists.
  • Assist in the coordination and scheduling of projects and meetings.
  • Attend meetings as assigned, serving as FCI liaison and/or minute taker as needed.
  • Cross-train with other IT personnel to provide seamless IT coverage during absences.
  • Other duties as assigned by Director of IT.
     

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Working knowledge of at least one current programming language (e.g., java, Python, Javascript, C++, PHP).
  • Demonstrated working technical knowledge of different versions of operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux), Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access), and report writers (e.g., Crystal Reports).
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and solve issues on a networked environment and cloud services.
  • Desire to keep current on new technologies and tools and to learn new tasks and technologies quickly.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and logical problem solving skills.
  • Good organizational and team work skills; ability to work on multiple projects and guide a project to completion. Ability to work with a diverse group of people with differing levels of technological abilities.
  • Ability to perform and complete work with minimal supervision.
  • The physical expectations of the position include: Visual ability to read computer screens and printed materials; Hearing and speaking abilities to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person; Ascend and descend stairs in building to support users at their workstations; Ability to pack, unpack, lift and carry 40 lbs., move, and relocate computer equipment including monitors, desktop computers and printers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of museum collections systems, preferably Mimsy XG.
  • Working knowledge of multiple operating systems, programming languages, database systems, network security, network protocols.
  • Working knowledge of Drupal, PHP, MySQL, CSS, Crystal Reports, Slack, Trello, Git.
  • Experience working in non-profit organizations, preferably higher education settings, helping people gain technical expertise.
  • Experience working with vendors and contract negotiations.

Additional Information:

This is a part-time benefit-eligible position, (26 hours per week).
