Grant Writer

Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY), an innovative, non-profit college that provides a uniquely effective model of Purpose-Centered Education, seeks a Grant writer to work in collaboration with the Chief Development Officer to expand fundraising capacity in support of the college and our students.

The Grant Writer position is a unique opportunity to be an integral part of a team that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of adult students. The successful candidate, who will come with grant writing experience in higher education or another non-profit development setting, will work collaboratively to identify and research new grant opportunities and secure funding, assist with writing other documents related to fundraising as well as support the success of the development program.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

The ideal candidate for this position will have 2 or more years of relevant grant writing experience in a college, university or other non-profit development office. The candidate will have demonstrated success in obtaining new, renewal and increased grant funding. They will possess exceptional writing and communication skills; impeccable grammar; the ability to write compelling letters, proposals and reports; strong familiarity with budgeting and financial reporting for grants; strong understanding of foundation, corporate and government grants; a high level of accuracy and attention to detail; exceptional time management and organizational skills; the ability to manage priority projects simultaneously; the ability to work on projects independently or collaboratively as part of a team; a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office, donor database/CRM systems and general research tools; strong interpersonal skills; a strong work ethic and positive attitude; and a passion and commitment for our mission.

A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in English, communications, or writing.  This position might require occasional night and weekend work related to donor events.


Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the grant writer will be responsible for writing clear, structured, articulate and persuasive letters of intent, proposals, reports and acknowledgements; preparation of supporting documents for proposal and report submission; ensuring all reporting requirements and deadlines are met for grants; tracking submissions and results;  maintaining grant contacts in database, the grant calendar and accurate funder records; conducting grant prospect identification and research; writing other development documents as requested; assistance in planning and executing grantor meetings; providing support for donor events as needed as well as performing other duties as assigned.
