Princeton University

The Department of Physics seeks an Associate or more senior Professional Specialist to work on the development and deployment of the Simons Observatory (SO) data reduction pipeline for Princeton University. The successful candidate must establish and maintain a deeply technical understanding of the various project systems and how the Princeton team's contributions add constructively to the effectiveness of the overall effort. The Simons Observatory is an international collaboration of approximately 200 scientists and engineers who are building a set of telescopes in the Atacama dedicated to measuring temperature and polarization fluctuations in the microwave background. These measurements should provide our best determination of cosmological parameters, probe the growth and evolution of large-scale structure and have the potential to detect gravitational waves emitted during the first moments of the universe's expansion. This position will work as a part of the SO data management team, which focuses on the reduction of the raw telescope data to well-characterized maps for science exploitation, and interfaces between subsequent parts of the science analysis pipeline. It will involve working with the SO data team to develop and deploy and exercise a computational framework capable of handling the SO data volume and complexity on state-of-the-art High Performance and High Throughput Computing facilities. This includes data transfer, low-level time ordered data processing and monitoring, and map making, including interfaces with the science working group pipeline. This position will require the ability to work collaboratively as part of a distributed team and to the project schedule, including giving regular oral and written presentations. Required: *Advanced degree in astronomy, astrophysics, physics or related field with a strong computational component; or in computational science, computer science or related field with a strong applied science component. PhD preferred. *Fluency in C++, Python and Unix scripting. *Experience with software version control systems such as Git. *Experience with High Performance Computing including message passing and threading tools such as MPI and OpenMP and/or High Throughput Computing including job scheduling tools such as HTCondor. *Strong communication skills. Desirable: *Experience with Cosmic Microwave Background data analysis, especially with time-domain data. *Experience working in a distributed software development team. This position is subject to the University's background check policy. Applicants must apply online at: https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/6841 and submit a CV, cover letter and contact information for three references.
