Department PPPL ITER and Tokamaks
Category Research and Laboratory
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a postdoctoral research position at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA. The successful candidate will advance tokamak scenario development and control on the DIII-D tokamak, with the primary focus on developing and applying reduced models for control applications in a fusion flight simulator. The successful candidate will be part of a team integrating the plasma control system into predictive whole discharge models for experimental planning, scenario optimization and control. The appointment will be based in San Diego at the DIII-D national fusion facility.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a fusion flight simulator, in a collaboration between PPPL and the DIII-D National Fusion Facility (San Diego, CA). The flight simulator will use the time-dependent transport solver TRANSP and a plasma control system simulator (Simulink®) to evolve a tokamak plasma discharges under the effects of external actuators. The work includes developing fast reduced models for magnetic equilibrium, heating and current drive sources using neural networks and machine learning methods. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist, a team player and an excellent communicator who will collaborate closely with the onsite team at DIII-D and with PPPL researchers to develop and successfully apply the fusion flight simulator for experimental design. The position is at the post-doctoral level.

The successful candidate will be based in San Diego and is expected to travel regularly to PPPL and to other national and international facilities for joint experiments, workshops and conferences.

Qualifications

Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics or in control engineering. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in tokamak physics and control applications. Familiarity with time-dependent simulations, including control-oriented solvers, is highly desirable. Experience with machine learning, control algorithm design, and real-time algorithm implementation is a plus. Experience with the General Atomics Plasma Control System software is desirable but not essential.
