Position Description - The Department of Journalism & Communication and the Africana Studies Program invite applications for a joint appointment as professor of practice dedicated to teaching and advising in these two thriving programs.
The professor will teach three courses each semester in areas of interest to students in Journalism & Communication and Africana Studies. Coursework might include subjects such as race, representation and media; news, politics and race; media and multicultural discourse and others. An ability to teach professional classes in reporting, editing or visual communication is required. The candidate should have relevant professional experience. The Professor of Practice will also serve as student adviser to majors in Journalism & Communication and Africana Studies.
A relevant Master’s degree or Ph.D. is required by appointment start date. This non-tenure-track position has an initial appointment of three years and is renewable upon completion. Salary and benefits are highly competitive.
The Department of Journalism & Communication has offered an undergraduate program of superior quality since 1927. Alumni are in the top ranks of American journalism. It has eight full-time faculty. With major and minor programs in journalism, science and environmental writing, and mass communication, the department enrolls about 100 majors and minors. Coursework in Africana Studies has been offered since the 1970s and the dedicated program was inaugurated in 1990. The growing program offers a major, minor and graduate certificate. Interdisciplinary in orientation, Africana’s participating faculty are drawn from throughout the college and offer more than 30 classes each year to hundreds of Lehigh students from every discipline.
